The Ministry of Health and Health New Zealand told TVNZ’s Breakfast programme they had “no plans for Long Covid monitoring nor for any economic analysis.” Report | TVNZ interview (Geo-locked) | Thread Response from Long Covid Support Aotearoa (LCSA) Written statement and interview on Radio NZ's Morning Report "Long Covid – and associated health conditions such as ME/CFS – remains poorly recognised and under-supported in New Zealand, despite growing international evidence about its impacts." "'Now that the scale of the problem is clearer, we want to know why there are still no plans to monitor it,' [spokesperson Larisa] Hockey said." LCSA Response | RNZ Interview

News Release 17-Mar-2026 Discovery of a bacterium that protects against long Covid Peer-Reviewed Publication Université catholique de Louvain FacebookXLinkedInWeChatBlueskyMessageWhatsAppEmail According to WHO, approximately 6% of the worldwide population who contract Covid-19 – some 400 million people – go on to develop a long-lasting form of the disease. These figures demonstrate that the persistent form of the disease remains a problem and is a major public health challenge. In 2021, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, University of Louvain (UCLouvain, Belgium) and its hospital, the Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc, launched a large-scale study to determine whether it is possible to predict, during the acute phase of infection, the development of long-term symptoms. The ultimate goal is to better understand the underlying mechanisms and, potentially, develop a preventive therapeutic solution. After five years of research, scientists have discovered the key role played by a bacterium, Dolosigranulum pigrum, that is naturally present in the respiratory microbiome. When present in greater numbers, these bacteria are associated with a reduction in the persistence of symptoms characteristic of long Covid.

Impaired VLCFA-peroxisome-mediated intestinal epithelial repair causes gastrointestinal sequelae of long COVID — Man Wang et al "findings support a model in which spike disrupts VLCFA metabolism by binding key lipid metabolic regulators and sequestering [linoleic acid], thereby suppressing PPAR-peroxisome signaling, impairing [enterocyte] differentiation and epithelial regeneration, and contributing to persistent GI symptoms."

News Release 12-Mar-2026 Trial finds vitamin D supplements don’t reduce covid severity but could reduce long COVID risk Peer-Reviewed Publication Mass General Brigham FacebookXLinkedInWeChatBlueskyMessageWhatsAppEmail Mass General Brigham study results signal a call to do further research into the connection between vitamin D supplementation and long COVID In a large, randomized trial, researchers at Mass General Brigham have found that high-dose vitamin D3 did not reduce COVID-19 infection severity, but may impact long COVID outcomes. Results of the study are published in The Journal of Nutrition. “There’s been tremendous interest in whether vitamin D supplements can be of benefit in COVID, and this is one of the largest and most rigorous randomized trials on the subject,” said senior author JoAnn Manson, MD, DrPH, of the Mass General Brigham Department of Medicine. “While we didn’t find that high-dose vitamin D reduced COVID severity or hospitalizations, we observed a promising signal for long COVID that merits additional research.”

An official website of the United States government Logo for Department of Health and Human Services Understanding Long COVID, Supporting Patients, Advancing Solutions What Is Long COVID? Long COVID is a serious chronic disease that can affect multiple body systems and significantly disrupt daily life. Long COVID affects 5–7 % of U.S. adults—roughly 18 million people, according to the CDC. Long COVID remains an ongoing public health challenge requiring continued research, clinical innovation, and coordinated response. Long COVID: A Multisystem Chronic Disease with National Impact Long COVID is a distinct and multisystem condition with its own drivers, risk factors, and clinical course. It affects all ages, regions, and communities.

March is Long COVID Awareness Month Long COVID Awareness Month logo Long COVID Awareness Month is a time for everyone impacted by Long COVID to come together globally in coordinated awareness and action. This effort will highlight the urgent need for prevention, research, funding, and long-term care for people suffering with Long COVID. Hundreds of millions worldwide continue to be infected with SARS-CoV-2, and many are still developing Long COVID. The World Health Organization estimates 10–20% of those infected experience prolonged symptoms. COVID-19 Longhauler Advocacy Project (C19LAP) has created a calendar of events to particpate, with many activities you can do from home.
