Future (Graphic shows relatively recent emergence of patriarchal systems weighted to benefit men and suppress women) Homo sapiens emerged somewhere between 200,000 and 300,000 years ago, and for approximately 290,000 of those years, we lived in egalitarian, matrilineal societies. We organized ourselves around mothers and maternal lineages, shared resources without the concept of private property, and raised children collectively rather than isolating them in nuclear families. Different types of work were valued without creating hierarchies that labeled some contributions as superior to others. Patriarchy isn't ancient in any meaningful sense. Instead, patriarchy is astonishingly recent. It's a brief and brutal experiment that has only existed for a tiny fraction of human history. And right now, in our lifetimes, we may very well be watching it fail.

Thus, in what is the most studied biocultural of all influences, birth has an impact on our lives in vastly different ways depending upon whether it is harsh, or gentle; induced, or spontaneous; and in every other conceivable way. Prenatal and perinatal psychologists from Arthur Janov — with his definitive and ground-breaking book, Imprints (1983) — to Frederick Leboyer (1975, 2009), to Thomas Verny (1981), to David Chamberlain (1988) have detailed the way our birth and that our birth affects us ever after in life ... often in ways that are irreversible and untouchable by any and all later experience and techniques. Before that, even, Otto Rank (1929, 1952), Nandor Fodor (1949), Donald W. Winnicott (1958), David Cheek and Leslie LeCron (1968), and Leslie Feher (1980) added much to our knowledge of how birth creates our underlying feelings and our perceived realities.
