Giftige PFAS-Verbindung aus Leverkusener Chemie-Deponie landet im Rhein In Leverkusen gelangen offenbar giftige Stoffe aus dem Chempark in den Rhein. Umweltschützer fordern Konsequenzen.

Der Chempark-Betreiber Currenta leitet den Stoff Perfluorbutansulfonsäure ( #PFBS) aus dem Sickerwasser der #Sonderabfalldeponie Leverkusen-Bürrig in den #Rhein.

Das hat eine Anfrage des #Umweltverbandes #BUND nach dem Umweltinformationsgesetz ergeben.

Die #EPA zieht Pläne zur Begrenzung von vier PFAS-Chemikalien – #GenX, #PFHxS, #PFNA und #PFBS – zurück und will die Durchsetzung der PFOA- und PFOS-Standards um zwei Jahre verschieben. Rund 200 Millionen Amerikaner trinken Wasser mit #Ewigkeits-Chemikalien.

The E.P.A. will uphold limits on two types of #PFAS, but is extending a deadline requiring water utilities to meet those limits to 2031. Also plans to eliminate & reconsider limits on #PFHxS, #PFNA, #HFPO-DA, and #PFBS.

🪴 Step 1. #Phytoremediation - plants that can accumulate mobile PFAS, such as #TFA and #PFBS are planted on the soil. These can be selected based on their ability to "hyperaccummulate" PFAS, but ideally should be locally sourced plants/crops. These are then harvested for biochar production.

Again - Beyond Pesticides Daily News Blog (Beyond Pesticides, March 31, 2023) A report from the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies the most recent event in the very long chronicle of EPA dysfunction that — put charitably — constitutes failures to enact its mission, and more accurately, sometimes crosses the line into malfeasance. In the report, OIG concludes that EPA’s 2021 PFBS Toxicity Assessment failed to “uphold the agency’s commitments to scientific integrity and information quality,” and that the agency’s actions “left the public vulnerable to potential negative impacts on human health.” As reported by The Guardian, “Trump administration appointees at . . . EPA meddled in agency science to weaken the toxicity assessment of a dangerous chemical.” Last year, Beyond Pesticide concerns about the myriad risks and harms of pesticides intersected with those about the PFAS (Per- and Polyfluorinated Substances) family of chemical compounds, of which PFBS is a member, when a study found very high levels of PFAS in multiple pesticide products. 2/2 So it is enlightening to see what #PFBS' manufacturer thought about it back in 2002: "3M believes PFBS-based surfactants, with only four perfluorinated carbon atoms, are a sustainable alternative to PFOS-based surfactants."

That worked out well, then....
