Scholarship recipients from #PLA2024 wrote about their experiences--from the sessions that shifted their approach to the connections that stayed with them long after the plane ride home. Read their reflections: https://bit.ly/4llEUKK

The green hornet by Wagner and campbell
I picked up a copy of Wagner and @aaroncampbellarts.bsky.social’s “Green Hornet” at #pla2024 and it was great. Loved the art. My stepfather listened to the old radio serial while he puttered, and it reminded me of him. Who doesn’t like seeing 1930s Midwest gangsters getting what’s coming to them?

Tariq Trotter “The Upcycled Self.”
On the way home from #pla2024, I listened to “The Upcycled Self,” about Tariq Trotter’s growing up in Philadelphia. Big recommendation for this one, especially as an audiobook.
Harrison Scott Keys all black cover of his book
Harrison Scott Key’s “How to Stay Married” is powerful. Listened to this on the way to #pla2024. Two damaged people struggling through a crumbling marriage. Key is very funny, and you can see the limits of humor in relationships. And how hard self-realization is. Recommended!
Thank You #pla2024
It was a great conference, plus I was in the right mindset to manage the crowds at the slumber party when I arrived back home.

Loved hearing the perspectives of Mary Annaise Heglar at #PLA2024 Safe travels to all the attendees heading home. I hope you had a great conference!
Thank you #PLA2024! We had a great time and hope all travel safely back to wherever (even if it's just around the corner). www.flickr.com/photos/19655...
Anybody else from #PLA2024 now at the Night Vale show?
If any #PLA2024 folks are still in Cbus tonight I’m planning to go to Hyde Park Steakhouse 5ish for happy hour. It’s near the convention center and has live jazz and decent happy hour drinks and snacks.
I don't know why the hall suddenly feels incredibly peopley (maybe because nobody can be in the exhibits?) but it does. Going to Read Romance, Fight the Patriarchy and then I think I'm done. #PLA2024
I am absolutely riveted by this #pla2024 session “Increase Religious Equity by Reclassifying Dewey 200's” and really hope to adopt this optional DDC arrangement for our library. 📚#PubLibs
Controversial opinion: sleep is a human right. People sleep in the library because they feel safe there. Check in if you must, there is a slim chance they need assistance, but let people sleep.

3 people were responsible for 90% of the 212 challenges to St. Tammany Parish libraries. 161 were from one lady. All of this is a drain on staff resources and is making serving on board an ordeal.

Virginia libraries developed book resumes to crowdsource defenses of challenged material. These are on the United Against Book Bans site.

Are censors waving religion around as a reason to ban books? The Interfaith Alliance have an argument against that.

324 challenges across 17 titles across 2 languages makes Sarah Maas the most challenged author of past year, though no single title cracks the top 10.
#PLA2024
Prior to 2019, your most challenged titles averaged about 8 challenges. Currently the number is in the hundreds.
Multi-title challenges have become the norm, some 90% of challenges.
