Astronomers Found Something Strange In Giant "Forbidden" Planet Nearly the Size of Its Star Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Email address Thank you! Three years ago, Carnegie University astronomers examining a small star called a red dwarf found something unexpected: a Jupiter-sized gas giant. In a star system like our own, this would be unremarkable. But at nearly a quarter the size of its host star, the exoplanet, TOI 5205b, was — in the literal sense — impossibly large. It blocked seven percent of the star’s light whenever it passed in front of it, forming one of the largest exoplanet transits on record. It was so physics-defying that the astronomers dubbed it “forbidden”; existing gas planet formation models couldn’t explain how a puny red dwarf, which is only forty percent of the mass of the Sun, could be capable of giving birth to it. Now, the astronomers got a second look with the James Webb Space Telescope to peer into its atmosphere. And their findings, published in a new study in The Astronomical Journal, reveal even more unusual aspects of the oversized world. The main curiosity is that its atmosphere has a lower concentration of heavy elements relative to hydrogen than gas giants in our own solar system (Jupiter...

Mars dust storms are sparking electricity and rewriting the planet's chemistry Planetary scientist Alian Wang has been studying this phenomenon in depth. In a series of studies, including recent work published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters, she has examined how these electrically charged dust activities influence the chemistry of Mars, particularly through their impact on isotopes. Static Electricity and Hidden Sparks on Mars When dust particles collide and rub together in Martian storms, they build up static electricity. This can produce strong electrical fields that trigger electrostatic discharges (ESDs). Because Mars has such low atmospheric pressure, these discharges occur more easily than on Earth. These events may appear as faint glowing effects, somewhat similar to auroras, and they set off a chain of electrochemical reactions. Although subtle, these processes play an important role in shaping the planet's surface and atmosphere. Lab Simulations Reveal Chemical Reactions Wang, a research professor at Washington University in St. Louis and a fellow of the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences, has recreated Martian conditions in the lab to study these effects. With support from NASA's Solar System Working Program, her team developed two specialized simulation chambers, PEACh (Planetary Environment and Analysis Chamber) and SCHILGAR (Simulation Chamber with InLine Gas AnalyzeR). Using these systems, the...

This Nearby Earth-Sized Planet Could Answer Big Questions About Alien Worlds TOI-4616 b is an Earth-sized exoplanet orbiting an M-dwarf that offers a strong benchmark for studying atmospheric loss and planetary evolution. Astronomers have identified a rocky exoplanet that may become an important reference point for future research. The planet orbits an M-type star, a class of small, cool stars that are extremely common in our galaxy. While rocky planets around these stars are also widespread, this particular world stands out. Researchers say it could help scientists better understand similar planets and how their atmospheres behave. The study’s authors describe it as “a reference system for highly irradiated rocky planets.” The new research has been submitted to the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The lead author is Francis Zong Lang, a doctoral researcher at the Center for Space and Habitability at the University of Bern in Switzerland. The paper is currently available on arXiv. Astronomers have confirmed more than 6,000 exoplanets so far, giving scientists a clearer picture of the variety of planetary systems beyond our own. Although observational biases still affect the data, certain patterns are starting to emerge. One increasingly clear trend is the close connection between M dwarf stars and rocky exoplanets. M Dwarfs and Rocky...

Dying stars are devouring giant planets, astronomers discover Stars like our Sun eventually run out of hydrogen fuel. When that happens, they begin to cool and expand, entering a phase known as a red giant. Scientists estimate that the Sun will reach this stage in about five billion years. The new findings, published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, are based on observations of nearly half a million stars that have recently entered this "post-main sequence" phase of their life cycle. Missing Planets Around Red Giants Researchers identified 130 planets and planet candidates (i.e., that still need to be confirmed) orbiting close to these stars, including 33 that had not been detected before. However, a clear pattern emerged. Planets in tight orbits were much less common around stars that had expanded enough to become red giants (i.e. that were further on in their post-main sequence evolution). This suggests that many of these close-in planets may have already been destroyed. Lead author Dr. Edward Bryant (Mullard Space Science Laboratory at UCL and the University of Warwick) explained: "This is strong evidence that as stars evolve off their main sequence they can quickly cause planets to spiral into them and be destroyed. This has been the subject...

893-DarkSky Oregon Artificial light at night also known as light pollution is degrading human safety and health as well as damaging the natural environment on which we all depend. The loss of the connection with the natural night sky has happened over the past 100 years. Restoring the natural night sky is relatively simple and can even save money. Before restoration can effectively begin it is essential to make night sky brightness measurements in both natural night sky and urban locations.
