In this portrait, stands Graziosa Torriani who was actively involved in philanthropy, together with her husband Dante Tomasini. They were successful entrepreneurs, despite humble origins and wars in Europe. They were donors to the Policlinico di Milano (also known as Ospedale Maggiore di Milano or Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico) which is a hospital in Milan. It is one of the oldest hospitals in Italy, founded by Francesco I of the House of Sforza, in 1456.

In support of the Maggiore Hospital, the two spouses donated substantial assets to finance the expansion of the Pavilions for university clinics, in addition to funding 1 million doses of penicillin free of charge for the poor. The commission of the portrait of Graziosa Torriani, like that of her husband, was entrusted to Italian artist Giuseppe Palanti. Both paintings were donated directly by the couple.

In this painting, which constitutes the "pendant" of the portrait of her husband, the vibrant benefactor is represented as a beautiful self-confident, but not arrogant, woman standing in a theatrical pose, tempered by a natural and sympathetic smile; Palanti indulges, using sinuous brushstrokes with skillful technique, to bring out the softness of furs and fabrics and spreads the colors on the walls with an almost impressionistic technique. The result is an eye-catching portrait, very worldly and certainly aimed at bringing out the social status of Torriani.

Palanti was a painter, illustrator, and urban planner, best known for his portraits, notably of Benito Mussolini and Pope Pius XI. He had a long collaboration with Teatro alla Scala in Milan, creating costume, set design, and advertising material for multiple opera productions. He was also a major contributor towards the development of the seaside resort Milano Marittima.
