๐ The Perfect Storm: Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and the Long COVID Crisis ๐ Myalgic Encephalomyelitis has suffered from a dramatic lack of attention and research since the 1950s. Since its recognition as a neurological disease by WHO in 1969, research in this area is estimated to be about 40 years behind. With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the devastating impact of one of the worst medical scandals of our time has become glaringly evident. Ineffective management of the pandemic has created an unparalleled humanitarian crisis, currently affecting hundreds of millions of people struggling with Long COVID. Estimates suggest that about 10% of these patients go on to develop Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. This perfect storm arises from decades of neglect coupled with inadequate preparedness for new health challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the existing weaknesses in our healthcare system and further marginalized ME/CFS patients. We must become aware of the significant challenges resulting from this crisis and demand that ME/CFS finally receives the urgent research and resources it deserves! ๐Together, we need to fight for greater visibility, support, and change in ME/CFS research! #MyalgicEncephalomyelitis #MECFS #LongCovid #MedicalCrisis #PandemicManagement #HumanitarianCrisis
