A close-up photograph of an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio glaucus) feeding on vivid purple butterfly bush flowers. The butterfly’s wings are open, displaying striking yellow coloration with bold black stripes and blue-orange spots near the edges. Its body and antennae are in sharp focus, and the textured flower clusters beneath it contrast with a softly blurred green background.

Papilio glaucus, the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, is fairly polyphagous, feeding on a wide range of host plants and found across much of eastern North America. But for their size, few insects rival their elegance. 🌿

The MCNB arthropod collection includes a large representation of the #INCSTEP focal taxa, especially #Papilionidae & #Hesperiidae 🦋

The team behind this collection is mainly in charge of coordinating taxonomic review across all partner institutions.

Papilio glaucus or eastern tiger swallowtail. Given the edges of its wing, I'm thinking that this is a male. I only ever see these near woodland areas so coming across one in the yard is always a blessed gift.
