A large fuzzy golden bee stands on a cluster of flowers, collecting pollen
#Xylocopa varipuncta. This is a male valley Carpenter bee, also called a teddy bear bee. It lacks a stinger, has bright green eyes, and is known to puncture flowers at the base to steal the nectar.
I love these fuzzy large guys!

Celebrate World Bee Day! From half-a-world-away, two carpenter #bees from #TrusMadi in #Sabah #Malaysia #Borneo. Both were photographed at a light trap at night. Blue carpenter bee, #Xylocopa tumida, and another carpenter bee, Xylocopa sp., perhaps X. myops (?). So Fuzzy!

Exciting news! 📢🆕
After all the hard work, we can finally report some preliminary but promising results from the #INCSTEP reference collection!
Starting today, we will be revealing some of them over the next few weeks. Let's get started with #Xylocopa! 📡🐝

Last Saturday was Darwin's & Wallace's Night at @mncn-csic.bsky.social, and the #INCSTEP project couldn't miss out! 🙌
Visitors were taught how to identify Iberian #Xylocopa species, informed about the project's aims and warned about the importance of NHCs for pollinator conservation 🐝🛡️🏛️
I caught a male eastern carpenter bee (Xylocopa virginica) that was buzzing around! Pretty early for them to be out. This warm weather is screwing everything up. Normally Feb is cold as hell here. I released him after this. #Xylocopa #Bees #InverteFest2025 #USfauna #MSfauna #Mississippi
L'abeille charpentière le #xylocopa de la famille des #hymenopteres est l'une des plus grosse abeille en France. Je la vois beaucoup sur mes sauges sclarées l'été et je peux la photographier régulièrement depuis des années grâce a cette plante.
A photo of a bee's front as it rests on the concrete handrail of a boardwalk. The Bee's black legs covered in light orangish brown hair like scales extend outwards from the bee's round face. The large eyes, pale yellow/green with large black spots surround the central portion of the face, the bottom of which is yellow, the top of which is black and has 3 oceli, primitive eyes, in an inverted triangular pattern and two antennae. The bee's bright yellow fuzzy body rises behind and around the head. The background is out of focus green foliage.

Another #TypeSpecimenTuesday! 🙌🏻
Today we have an infrasubespecific type! 🤔
This is a male #Xylocopa iris subsp. 'uclesiensis', which was used to describe a variety called 'gracilis'.
Complex, right? 😵💫
Hence, this would be called 'Xylocopa iris uclesiensis var. gracilis'... Try to say it quickly!
