Besonders Pilze der Gattung Penicillium prägen Medizin, Lebensmittelproduktion und Biotechnologie weltweit nachhaltig, bis heute. Seit den 1940er-Jahren retten sie täglich Menschenleben, obwohl sie äußerlich eher unspektakulär sind. Bereits Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts erkannte der italienische Wissenschaftler Bartolomeo Gosio, dass bestimmte Penicillium-Arten bakterienhemmende Substanzen bilden. Er isolierte daraus die Mycophenolsäure und beschrieb ihre antibiotische Wirkung. Heute wird dieser Stoff jedoch nicht als Antibiotikum, sondern vor allem als Immunsuppressivum eingesetzt, etwa nach Organtransplantationen oder bei Autoimmunerkrankungen. Seine Arbeit belegt die medizinische Relevanz von Schimmelpilzen. Den entscheidenden Durchbruch erzielte 1928 der schottische Mediziner Alexander Fleming. Bei der Arbeit mit Bakterienkulturen stellte er fest, dass ein zufällig gewachsener Schimmelpilz umliegende Bakterien abtötete. Er isolierte die Substanz und nannte sie Penicillin. Obwohl das Penicillin zunächst instabil war, legte seine Entdeckung den Grundstein für die moderne antimikrobielle Therapie. Erst Anfang der 1940er-Jahre gelang es Howard Florey und Ernst Boris Chain, Penicillin zu reinigen, klinisch zu testen und industriell herzustellen. 1941 wurde in den USA ein besonders leistungsfähiger Penicillium-Stamm entdeckt, der bis heute Grundlage der Produktion ist. 1945 erhielten Fleming, Florey und Chain gemeinsam den Nobelpreis für Medizin. Neben der Medizin ist Penicillium auch für die Lebensmittelindustrie unverzichtbar. Arten wie Penicillium camemberti sind für den Geschmack und die Konsistenz von Camembert und Brie verantwortlich. Zudem werden Schimmelpilze in der Enzymherstellung, der Pharmaindustrie und weiteren biotechnologischen Verfahren genutzt. Penicillium, ein stiller Lebensretter, wurde von der VAAM zur „Mikrobe des Jahres 2026“ bestimmt.
