How does #aging disrupt intestinal #StemCell (ISC) lineage fidelity and epithelial barrier function? This study shows that low PEX5 impairs #peroxisomal protein import, leading to ISC mis-differentiation; #aspirin rescues this by enhancing β-oxidation of VLCFAs @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/49rBoJf

New: the largest D-bifunctional protein deficiency cohort in nearly 20 years

Neonatal encephalopathy remains typical, but adult survival is possible even in neonatal-onset cases

And importantly: normal/mild VLCFAs don't rule out DBP-D.

We recently published a #neuropathology case report describing how a gain-of-function mutation in #peroxisomal beta-oxidation (Mitchell Syndrome) affects human neuropathology. It seems certain cell types may be uniquely vulnerable, including sensory #neurons, motor neurons, and myelinating cells.
