Happy 40 YEAR anniversary to the day this was written:
\/\The Conscience of a Hacker/\/
Appeared first in @phrack.org issue 7 - phrack.org/issues/7/3
I believe it made an appearance on a particular @defcon.bsky.social badge too in more recent years 🤔

Who is the original hacker? Many agree that it's John Draper, a man who started hacking telephone systems with a whistle found in a cereal box.

Here's another illustration of #phreaking #hardware, to join my illustrations of the Cap'n Crunch whistle.
This is the famous Blue Box made by @stevewoz.bsky.social and sold by partner-in-mischief, Steve Jobs.
Would folks know what this was if you wore it on a shirt?
Get your phreak on, folks.

I did a few designs with the famous Cap'n Crunch bo'sun whistle used back in the day for phone #phreaking.
#Maker and #hacker lore we can proudly wear.
Here's the first one. I'll make the other ones available over the next few days.

i saw it referred to *many* times over the years in hacker/phreaker books and articles, but never came across a technical […]

Whistle 2600Hz like old-school phone phreaks! Before the internet, a simple 2600Hz tone hacked telephone systems. Test your vocal chops on my web app to see if you've got what it takes to be a cool retro hacker:

Long before the internet, the global phone network was hackable by playing a single tone at 2600Hz.
Whistled into a payphone, it could grant you unrestricted access, a skill made famous by legends like Cap'n Crunch. Do you have the vocal chops to be an old-school phone phreak?
I built a web […]

An elaborate setup for blueboxing Venezuela. The laptop contained the dialer and played the tones into the handset. From the desktop I could monitor and record everything. #phreaking

The silverbox I made for Joybubbles for his birthday one year. You would flip the switch and it turned 3,6,9,* into A,B,C,D. He didn't have it in his hands an hour before he was already messing with directory assistance! #phreaking
📞 Exciting new (open access!) article from Jacob Bruggeman comparing "telephone enthusiasts" in the UK and phone #phreaking in the US. He argues compellingly that each contributed to a global movement of telco hackers.
Love this note about the availability of documentation: "To anyone paying […]
Guy sitting at the desk with a large contraption made of an Erector Set (Meccano), with a turntable, lightbulbs and other stuff all wired together to answer the phone, play a message and record the caller's message. Equipment is vintage 1950s.
A more modern (80s) answering machine or cassette player wired to some raw circuits, devices with knobs, random other devices, a red telephone whose handset is placed on an acoustic coupler.
