Lourdes Grotto at Clairmarais in Clairmarais, France The replica of the Lourdes Grotto is located on the road leading from Clairmarais to Cassel. Around a bend, on your right, a strange rock beckons. Candles illuminate the rocky mass. The grotto was built near the former Saint Bernard Institution, once run by the Assumptionist Fathers. In 1934, the Reverend Father Superior fell seriously ill. The religious vowed to create a grotto for the Virgin Mary if he regained his health. The Fathers therefore undertook the construction of the grotto, which became a place of fervent prayer. Every year, on August 15, the feast of the Assumption, several thousand Christians gather throughout the day at the Clairmarais grotto to celebrate this holy day together. On Friday afternoon, the faithful of the region are expected in the meadow surrounding the grotto for a moment of sharing and prayer, before the traditional Marian vigil which ends with a torchlight procession.

La Haye-de-Routot’s Tree Chapels in La Haye-de-Routot, France In the small village of La Haye-de-Routot in Normandy, France, stand two extraordinary yew trees, each more than 1,000 years old. They grow directly in front of the local church, Église Notre-Dame. Like many ancient yews, their trunks have hollowed over centuries while the trees continue to thrive. One of these trees shelters a tiny chapel dedicated to Saint Anne. Built in 1866, it fits entirely inside the living tree. You can step through the trunk and stand where villagers once came to pray. Although it no longer seems to be used for services, the space remains intact and open to visitors. The second tree holds a small altar dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. Created in 1897, this one is still occasionally used for worship and small devotional gatherings. The chapels are free to visit, and parking is available right in the village.

Sainte Baume Grotto in Plan-d'Aups-Sainte-Baume, France Reaching the grotto of St. Mary Magdalene requires an hour-long, stair-intensive hike up the mountain. According to tradition, she spent the last 30 years of her life here in contemplation. The church at the site houses some of her relics, reports vary, mentioning either an arm or a leg bone, and Dominican priests living at the site hold a daily mass at 11:00 a.m. Visitors should note that there are no bathrooms at the grotto itself. The parking area below does have flush toilets (bring your own tissue) and a small café, making it the perfect spot to prepare for or recover from the climb.

Text of poem - Pilgrimages. There is an island there is no going to but in a small boat the way the saints went, travelling the gallery of the frightened faces of the long-drowned, munching the gravel of its beaches. So I have gone up the salt lane to the building with the stone altar and the candles gone out, and kneeled and lifted my eyes to the furious gargoyle of the owl that is like a god gone small and resentful. There is no body in the stained window of the sky now. Am I too late? Were they too late also, those first pilgrims? He is such a fast God, always before us and leaving as we arrive. There are those here not given to prayer, whose office is the blank sea that they say daily. What they listen to is not hymns but the slow chemistry of the soil that turns saints' bones to dust, dust to an irritant of the nostril. There is no time on this island. The swinging pendulum of the tide has no clock; the events are dateless. These people are not late or soon; they are just here with only the one question to ask, which life answers by being in them. It is I who ask. Was the pilgrimage I made to come to my own self, to learn that in times like these and for one like me God will never be plain and out there, but dark rather and inexplicable, as though he were in here?
