Giving Ribwort Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) some love! Those inconspicuous flowers must be displaying an ‘all you can eat’ neon sign or something because it’s a pollinator oasis! 🐝 😃 #plantagolanceolata

Watercolour #botanicalillustration of Ribwort plantain Plantago lanceolata in progress. You can see the layer of paint druing is yellow green, and has been applied over the base layer of a darker green whcih shows the veins and leaf tecture. There are three leaves on the page, which I was workign with, and my paintbrush along with my paintbox. The paintbox has the yellow green in the palette. Under the page you can see some photo reference I was using. The plant has roots and a close up detail of one flower from the flowering spike on the right of the illustration.
Ribwort plantain Plantago lanceolata. This photo shows the illustration before I add the scape and the flowering heads, its just a basal rosette of lanceolate leaves with their parallel veins, along with the simple roots. You can see the pencil drawing of the flowering beads (yet to be painted, so currently without colour) and my hand holding my paint brush. there are also the four leaves I was working with for colour reference in the photo.
Completed botanical illustration of Ribwort plantain Plantago lanceolata. This time it's just a scan of the finished illustration, cut to white. There are three flowering heads, two are side on and one is pointing toward the vuewer, The sideways ones are differnt shapes (and ages), one blunter and more elongate as it's older. The stamens stick out from the flowers, and although they're cream, in the older flowering head they've turned brown. The stem is ridged and squared and you can see the basal rosette of leaves, immediately recognizable because of their parallel long veins. Roots, pale and simple, stretch to the left of the basal rosette. I've included a few yellowing spots of leaf damage, partly cause its fun, but also to show how damage on the leaves looks. The underside of the leaves are slightly paler, and one leaf is seen sideways on to show this. The close up of one flower, on the right of the illustration, shows one flower with four cream petals and the creamy anthers.
Recent #sciart #botanicalillustration of #ribwort #plantain #plantagolanceolata. What an obliging plant, with leaves to work with even in the depths of a wintery January! And if you crush the leaves, they smell just like mushrooms. I love to include tiny areas of leaf damage if I can sneak them in.
