The 4 @who.int -defined preventable meningitis pathogens of interest (S #pneumoniae, N #meningitidis, #Haemophilusinfluenzae, and Group B streptococcus) contributed to 98 700 deaths (77 000–127 000) and 594 000 cases (514 000–686 000).
The study shows that even when certain #Streptococcus #pneumoniae mutants are attenuated for invasive disease, they can invade the mucosal epithelium and trigger #innate immune responses. A really valuable contribution to our understanding of #host–pathogen interactions and pneumococcal biology
