What to know about shingles, a painful infection that vaccination can prevent NBA star Tyrese Haliburton was recently diagnosed with shingles. The news drew attention to an illness that many people rarely talk about but is far more common than many realize. In Canada, 130,000 people develop shingles each year. The infection can cause a painful rash and, for some, long-lasting pain that can affect their quality of life for months. Yet shingles cases are also largely preventable through vaccination. Despite the availability of a highly effective vaccine, fewer than four in 10 Canadian adults aged 50 and older report having received the shingles vaccine. As researchers focused on aging and vaccination at Toronto Metropolitan University’s National Institute on Ageing, we study vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccination policies and opportunities to improve prevention in Canada. What is shingles? Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is an infection that typically appears as a painful rash with blisters. The virus responsible for shingles is the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a chickenpox infection, the virus remains in the body and can reactivate when the immune system weakens due to aging, health conditions or certain treatments. People who received the chickenpox vaccine can also develop shingles, but the risk is much lower. Symptoms often begin with...

Experimental infection and viral pathogenesis of a human isolate of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza strain in Jersey cows In 1996, the FLUAV lineage A/Goose/Guangdong/1996 (H5N1) was first identified in China, linked to several outbreaks that resulted in mortality and neurological dysfunction in domestic waterfowl1. Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5Nx viruses have continuously evolved through reassortment with other influenza viruses, diversifying into multiple genetic clades and jumping into several species2,3. Notably, clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1 viruses have caused several global outbreaks in recent years, demonstrating an increased potential to infect mammalian species, including raccoons, domestic and wild cats, red foxes, bears, minks, otters, skunks, and sea mammals4,5,6,7. From 1996 to 2023, several human infections with H5N1 have been reported, resulting in a case fatality rate exceeding 50%, highlighting its dual threat to both animal and human health8. On March 25, 2024, a case of HPAI H5N1 was reported in a Texas dairy cow caused by a novel B3.13 genotype, a reassortant virus of an ancestral European 2.3.4.4b strain, and a North American wild bird virus5. Clinical signs in infected cows included decreased rumination rate, mild respiratory signs, lethargy, and, most importantly, decreased milk production with abnormal colostrum-like milk appearance9. Epidemiological and genomic data suggest that cow-to-cow transmission and the interstate movement of animals contributed to the widespread dissemination of...

Dementia: Cystitis, several bacterial infections linked to higher risk - Medical News Today This study was a nationwide registry study in Finland. This allowed researchers to examine an extensive amount of data. To start off, they identified hospital-presenting diseases that had “a prevalence of 1% or higher among dementia cases” and evaluated which increased dementia risk. Next, they examined the 20 years prior to an individual’s dementia to identify factors, such as the sequence of diseases linked to higher dementia risk. Finally, they saw how much the link between severe infections remained after taking the other dementia-related diseases into consideration. For this study, severe infection referred to infections treated in the hospital. Researchers focused on individuals ages 65 or older. These individuals had late-onset dementia that occurred between 2017 and 2020. Researchers matched these with controls who did not have dementia at the time individuals with dementia were diagnosed. In all, 62,555 participants with dementia and 312,772 controls were included. The average age of participants was 81 years. Researchers also conducted an additional analysis of dementia cases diagnosed before age 65. They confirmed dementia cases by looking at hospital inpatient and outpatient records, as well as data on medication purchases and reimbursement entitlements. They reviewed hospital inpatient and outpatient records to identify diagnoses...

Severe infections linked to higher dementia risk independent of coexisting illnesses Severe infections increase the risk of dementia independently of other coexisting illnesses, according to a new study published March 24th in the open-access journal PLOS Medicine by Pyry Sipilä of the University of Helsinki, Finland, and colleagues. Severe infections have been linked to an increased risk of dementia. However, it has been unclear whether this association is explained by other coexisting, non-infectious diseases that predispose people to both infections and dementia. In the new study, researchers used nationwide Finnish health registry data covering more than 62,000 individuals aged 65 or older who were diagnosed with late-onset dementia between 2017 and 2020, along with more than 312,000 matched dementia-free controls. Taking a broad approach, they examined all hospital-treated diseases recorded during the previous twenty years, identifying 29 diseases that were robustly associated with increased dementia risk. Nearly half (47%) of dementia cases had at least one of the 29 identified diseases before their diagnosis. Of those diseases, two were infections: cystitis (a urinary tract infection) and bacterial infection of an unspecified site. Among the non-infectious diseases, the strongest associations with dementia were seen for mental disorders due to brain damage or physical disease, Parkinson's disease, and alcohol-related mental and behavioral disorders...

Mathematical modeling of sequential Dengue-Zika infections: dynamic insights into antibody-dependent enhancement and neutralization effects A.1. Proof of Theorem 3.1 Let \(\mathbb {X}= (S_{h}(t), I_{hd}(t), I_{hz}(t), R_{hd}(t), R_{hz}(t), J_{1}(t), J_{2}(t), R(t), S_{m}(t), I_{md}(t), I_{mz}(t))\) be the solution of the system (3). To prove the positivity of the system (3), we assume that there exists a trajectory that passes through a positive cone at some time \(\tilde{t}\) such that \({\textbf {(a1):}}\) Now, under the assumption (a1), we consider \(S_{h}(\tilde{t})=0\) and \(S_{h}(\tilde{t})>0\) for \(t\in (0, \tilde{t})\). Then, from the first differential equation of the system (3) it follows that It clearly resembles that \(S_{h}(\tilde{t})\) is increasing at \(\tilde{t}\). Therefore, there must exist a small neighbourhood of \(\tilde{t}\) say \(n_{0}\) such that which clearly contradicts our assumption (a1). Hence, \(S_{h}(t)>0\ \ \forall \ \ t\ge 0\). Similarly, for the second equation of system (3), it is obtained Thus, \(I_{hd}(t)\) is increasing at \(\tilde{t}\), and \(\exists\) a \(k_{0}\) such that \(I_{hd}(t)<0\) for \(\tilde{t}-k_{0}<t<\tilde{t}\). This violates the assumption (a1). Therefore, \(I_{hd}(\tilde{t})>0\ \ \forall \ \ t\ge 0\). In a similar way, it can be seen that all the remaining variables are positive for \(t\ge 0\). A.2. Proof of Theorem 3.2 Let N(t) denotes the total human population at time t such that Then, the rate of change in N(t) is...

180 000 infections in 2024, 47 000 by 2045 - if SA rolls out the HIV prevention jab South Africa will receive its first batch of the once-every-six-months HIV-prevention shot, lenacapavir, soon. The government will have to dig deep in its pocketbook to make sure the country reaps the full benefit of this prevention medicine in the aftermath of the Trump administration’s defunding shocks of 2025. The first batch is part of doses paid for by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. But in total, the fund will only donate 3% of the stock required to end AIDS by 2043 in the country. South Africa’s first batch of the once-every-six-months HIV-prevention shot, lenacapavir (LEN) – paid for with the country’s current grant from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria – will soon arrive, the health department says, although it’s slightly delayed. Government roll-out is set to start in government clinics within the next couple of months, depending on when the first batch of medicine arrives, and by when samples of the first batch have been quality-tested to ensure safe and effective medicine will be distributed. Results published in 2024 showed that this twice-a-year injection is almost perfect in stopping someone from getting infected with HIV through sex, leading to it being hailed...

Her son needed a fecal transplant for a fearsome C. diff infection. Getting one required a tortuous journey Her son had been sick for four months when Blanca Morales started asking about a transplant. It had started with a case of strep throat from Mundo’s first-grade class — routine enough, treatable with antibiotics. Then he started having stomach trouble. Mundo was the youngest of five. Morales had been a mom a long time. She wasn’t fazed by a little vomiting. She kept pails from Halloween and Easter by her kids’ beds, just in case. This was routine until it wasn’t. Morales sat on the floor by the toilet pinning back Mundo’s hair, catching his throw-up in a bucket, wiping his tears. They wound up at the ER. Morales had never heard of Clostridioides difficile when they got the diagnosis. By the third relapse, she could identify the infection by its smell. It was both acrid and sweet at once, somewhere between burnt plastic and rotting flower, the smell of hospital. The illness had likely been sparked by strep-fighting antibiotics back in March 2025, the bacterial community of Mundo’s colon wiped out, allowing the heartier, toxin-spewing C. diff to proliferate — a microscopic strongman taking advantage of a microbial power vacuum. In April, Mundo had learned to take pills...
