Singing / chanting / resonating / vibrating, in harmony with a group of other human beings is incredibly powerful in ways we don't fully understand. But we know it is good.

Another great example of how music - and connecting with others in one's community - can help improve wellbeing and mental health.

There are other examples of similar groups across the country with similar positive outcomes.

Exploring fathers’ experiences of seeking support for postnatal depression Exploring fathers’ experiences of seeking support for postnatal depression

Upon interviewing #Fathers who report experiencing #PostnatalDepression, we find that fathers often don't recognize postnatal depression. If they do, it is common for them not to disclose 🗣️, and medical professionals' 🥼 response to help-seeking is only demotivating. tinyurl.com/4ttbdya8

Morna Ikosa offers hope to new moms through ‘Unmasking Postnatal Depression’ Postnatal depression is often overlooked and misunderstood in many African communities. Namibian author Morna Ikosa says her debut book, titled ‘Unmasking Postnatal Depression’, aims to shed light on the subject. The book serves as a resource for wellness and human resource practitioners, while also offering practical insights to mothers and their partners navigating the often-taboo realities of postnatal depression. Ikosa says the book is designed as a practical and compassionate guide for those navigating the early stages of parenthood, a time often romanticised but rarely discussed in terms of the emotional and mental toll it can take. She says while postnatal depression is a global issue, it remains particularly under-addressed in African communities, where traditional expectations and cultural taboos often discourage open discussion. “This book is a beacon of hope for every woman who has been led to believe she is crazy or dramatic for struggling emotionally during and after pregnancy. It acknowledges the profound impact of postnatal depression, not only on mothers, but also on fathers, offering guidance to help men navigate this challenging period alongside their partners,” Ikosa says. She says the book features stories of women from various African cultures and their lived experiences with postnatal depression. One chapter includes men, offering insight into how partners can navigate and support loved ones going through this often misunderstood condition. “This is not just a book. It is a powerful tool that empowers mothers, fathers, families and health professionals to confront the often-hidden challenges of postnatal mental health. This book invites the reader on a transformative journey to break the silence surrounding postnatal depression and other forms of depression,” Ikosa says. The author says the book comes with a complimentary song, which the readers can download and listen to while reading. “The book is designed with the reader in mind, as every page is compiled and designed to engage the reader’s senses. Moreover, the book provides insights and wisdom from five dedicated experts – Ute Sinkala, a psychologist, Ujama Nujoma, a medical doctor who has worked in the field of psychiatry, Raghilt Redecker, a midwife, Dorle Verrinder, a lactation consultant, and Juliane Courtney-Clarke, a dietitian and nutrition expert specialising in depression.” Ikosa can be reached via email at morna@micommnam.com The post Morna Ikosa offers hope to new moms through ‘Unmasking Postnatal Depression’ appeared first on The Namibian.
