The spike photographed isn't anywhere near the largest of desmatosuchine spikes, which could reach up to 18 inches long. It’s easy to imagine how the large #rauisuchid predators that prowled the Late #Triassic (e.g. #Postosuchus) would have thought twice before attacking an #aetosaur.

Prestosuchus & other loricatans, such as #Postosuchus, were the dominant large, apex carnivores through most of the Triassic. Their dominance of the terrestrial carnivore guild only began to wane in the latest Triassic, with #herrerasaur & #neotheropod dinosaurs emerging as new apex predators.
