The spike photographed isn't anywhere near the largest of desmatosuchine spikes, which could reach up to 18 inches long. It’s easy to imagine how the large #rauisuchid predators that prowled the Late #Triassic (e.g. #Postosuchus) would have thought twice before attacking an #aetosaur.
🧵 End.
An aetosaur osteoderm (armour plate) fossil with a large spike sticking out from the centre. Specimen from the collections of the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.
Given recent interest in the ankylosaur, Spicomellus & its extreme armour, I thought l'd share this photo of an #aetosaur spike for this #FossilFriday. Highlights how wonderfully weird #Triassic reptiles pioneered many striking traits once thought limited to dinosaurs.

I've had aetosaurs on my mind lately. So this #fossilfriday is an articulated specimen of the aetosaur Typothorax coccinarum. On display at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, Albuquerque.

New #aetosaur, Kuttysuchus minori described from India 🇮🇳 - this odd crocodile relative adds to the growing richness of Indian #Triassic faunas. Hopefully such new #fossils help attract more attention to Indian #paleontology.

These enigmatic #Pseudosuchia reinforce what a strange time the #Triassic was for reptile evolution.
