We would have child care costs of 10k children covered rn had the program where parents choose rather than setting up a huge gate keeping bureaucracy loaded with employees with conflicts on interest.
Exactly this. We are coming up on the 5th year anniversary of #PreschoolforAll, and the enrollment numbers are abysmal along with the rate of licensed providers joining PFA.

Portland, Oregon: A hearing is at 1 pm today. What could have been one of the most successful programs to transfer wealth from very high earners to lower and middle class workers is on the chopping block. Had #PreschoolforAll implemented this in a more timely manner, it would have worked.

Preschool for All has 3,800 open seats for 2025-2026 school year! Applications due April 30th
Basic information: All 3- and 4-year-olds with a parent or legal guardian living in Multnomah County are eligible. For the 2025-26 school year, children must be 3 or 4 by September 1, 2025. If your child gets a preschool spot, you must show proof of age and address when enrolling. The application is available in English, Simplified Chinese, Dari, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
Remember: Children can only be placed in preschools you list, so choose options that fit your family’s needs. When you apply, you can pick up to six preschools and rank them in the order of preference on your child’s application. Placement decisions are not first-come, first-served. Applying anytime during the spring primary period won’t affect your application decision. Due to limited space, applying does not guarantee your child will get a placement. Families will be notified about application decisions via email by early June 2025. If your child isn’t offered a spot, they will be on the waitlist for all preschools on your application.

@multco.bsky.social could do this too. The millions in tax revenue have been collected, but instead of giving parents vouchers, they are creating a huge, inefficient bureaucracy. Only 2500 children are getting free preschool after 4 years. #preschoolforall
