Yesterday was the birthday of neo-Gothic architect Augustus Welby #Pugin (1812-1852).
Pugin designed the East window for the old chapel at St Mary's Priory (now our College Library), and the stunning processional cross (now in the V&A's collections; 📷 at V&A's 2025 Makers of Modern Gothic display).

Looking up at entrance to Gawthorpe Hall in Lancashire. Blue sky overhead. Pillars either side of the large curved doorway with three levels of large windows above (a sign of wealth...so much glass). Redesigned in 1850s by Sir Charles Barry (of Houses of Parliament fame) in collab with Pugin and the J.G.Grace interior decorators (from Yorkshire...commissioned in Lancashire gasp!). Well worth a visit. Interiors and the textile collection are something else!

This Cross is apparently the work of Augustus #Pugin, the guy who designed the interior of Parliament
St Mary's at West Tofts, Norfolk. A small medieval church which has had work in the Victorian period which has added to its size. The church has been in a Ministry of Defence training area since 1944 however it is surrounded by lush green grass of a cemetery. The church is constructed of local flints which are abundant locally and has tall pointed windows surrounded with warm honey coloured stone blocks with stained glass in the windows. A rare opportunity to visit St Mary's at West Tofts, Norfolk. The church has been in a Ministry of Defence training area since 1944 and is not normally open to the public. This small medieval church was transformed by AWN #Pugin and his son both inside and out. No expense was spared.

Today, on the Feast of the Assumption, Mass is held at the Rotherwas Chapel, Hereford in keeping with its #Catholic history & private chapel of the #Bodenham family. C16th with earlier origins. Extension & restoration by EW #Pugin 1860s; further C20th restoration. Tudor hammer beam roof.
We'll be exhibiting at the Manchester Book Fair this weekend in the glorious setting of The Monastery, Gorton.
