Close-up portrait of German photojournalist Anja Niedringhaus smiling warmly at the camera while holding a large white Canon EOS-1 DSLR with a massive telephoto lens in her right hand. She has light brown hair with gray streaks pulled back, sunglasses resting on top of her head, and wears a blue vest over a black-and-white striped shirt; the out-of-focus background is dark, drawing all attention to her face and the professional camera gear she carries, capturing her as the Pulitzer Prize-winning war photographer known for her powerful images from conflict zones in Iraq, Afghanistan, and beyond.

In #HermosaBeach, CA, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1954, a local photographer captured #Pulitzer-winning 'Tragedy by the Sea'. A witness saw a 19-month-old child swept out to sea, tangled in seaweed. His parents, the McDonalds, stayed on the beach all day anyway, looking and crying.

Column | Trump is the biggest threat to D.C.’s architectural splendor since War of 1812 President Trump’s garish, piecemeal changes to Washington’s urban design and architecture are poised to destroy symbolism upheld for centuries.

"Like the news cycle, architectural and urban spaces are treated as mere voids, waiting to be filled with Trumpian noise."

So many incredible observations in this piece.

Some treasures still exist at the @washingtonpost.com--Philip Kennicott is one.

Tinkers Review

An emotional, dense novella. Paul Harding packed an incredible amount of life, loss, and adventure into this tidy package.

Follow along the final days of George Washington Crosby (it’s not a spoiler when it’s told in the very first sentence). Witness as we unwrap, then unravel, his life and that of his father’s.

The multi-generational journey is at times a bit of a mind-bender. It features an unconventional structure meant to pull you within the fold; large unbroken sections, and unformatted dialogue blend nearly seamlessly inline between characters. Choices that make “Tinkers” not the easiest read, but the result is like moving through a thick, turbid river, whose water is rich with life and wonder. Not particularly inviting and certainly not warm, but all the more intriguing and engrossing in its uncomfortable familiarity.

She took my face in her hands, which were cold and raw and calloused, and told me to open my mouth.
You must not speak for a week.
I began to say, No, I went looking for Father’s teeth in tree wood and his hair in the stalks of bushes and—but she clamped my face more tightly and said, Stop. Seven days. Your tongue will fall off if you speak any more. It may have been true, for all I ever knew.

This book has taken me time to digest, even with the benefit of having listened to Harding speak in the past on his process and recognizing some of the patterns he touched on: the steady distillation of thought, the percussive rhythm of prose, and shaping his literary music to fit the vibe of the piece just right.

“Tinkers” started as a short story, but it extended over the years as it was worked, and reworked. If I squint, I might guess where the additions were made around that original kernel, but his labor has made any such joinery perfectly seamless.

Author Paul Harding was surprised to win a Pulitzer for this. I think many were since it was an obscure debut from a fairly obscure publisher, Bellevue Literary Press (respectfully)…

Love a novella that can really mess with you. I’ve listened to Harding speak about writing for a while and always valued his insights so loved finally diving into this to check it out for myself.

His writing, in a mix of sober and surreal forms, explored what it meant to be American. The questions Roth posed and the circumstances that vexed his characters are still with us, still relevant. Roth was one of the most honored U.S. authors of his generation.

A composite motivational image featuring a painted portrait of Pearl S. Buck on the left side and a block quote on the right. The portrait shows an older Pearl S. Buck, an American novelist and Nobel laureate, depicted in a realistic oil-painting style against a dark background. She has white hair styled in soft waves with a thoughtful, dignified expression. Her light blue eyes gaze directly at the viewer with quiet intensity. She wears pearl earrings, a pearl necklace, and a deep black off-the-shoulder velvet or satin dress. Her right left rests under her chin in a contemplative pose, with a prominent ring visible on her finger. The painting is signed in the lower right with what appears to be "Boone '21" or a similar mark. To the right of the portrait is a rectangular brown panel containing the quote in white text: "When good people in any country cease their vigilance and struggle, then evil men prevail." Below the quote, attribution reads "Pearl S. Buck" in smaller text. The overall design combines classic portraiture with inspirational typography on a dark, elegant background, evoking themes of wisdom, responsibility, and moral vigilance.
