Happy Anniversary FOR MY BROOKE I want to write you the best love poem to ever grace a page, But there's a massive immovable something That keeps getting in the way. Maybe the wondrous words made by a million other Lovers Or lines, Or couplets. Make me fearful to try and fit you into stanzas, Maybe it's because I am scared that once the words are on this paper You won't need me to be their representative anymore; Rewarding my sacred speeches of your softness — Talking endlessly of my tributes to you— Raving on and on My recognition of your goodness.
You'd have all of my essence, And grit, And boundless love Etched right there in the palms of your hands. Your fingers will trace the print of our love's epic-Lingering over the words I made up, Because there simply weren't any in our language That describe the feeling Of seeing a night full of stars for the very first time, Being held by a supernova; How do I say I'd live a billion light years if it meant the particles of matter of me— The very atoms— Could float next to yours? How do I say I would master physics to fuse the energy of us forever?
Maybe I haven't written the poem yet because it is Frightening to tell you in totality Exactly what it is about you that breathes vitality into me, To tell you I love you, But not just how you love a partner. I love you in the way the moon loves her sun— The way you illuminate me. I don't know how to say those things. Sometimes I just want to curl up and hide, to deny and run from what’s inside, lock myself away, stop talking to friends, but I can’t, because I know where it ends. At 40 years old, a life spent on dope, she used it to hide, she used it to cope, and within the walls of an NA meeting, weeping confession, mind overheating. A young adult, yet again on the ward, caught with their head in a noose of a cord, deciding to stand and confront that pain, and never ending up back there again.

"I Know Where It Ends"
Is this where it ends or begins? That’s a stupid remark. How am I meant to know? I’m just here carving my own skin, aiming blind in the dark, ease in as the pain grows. I’m playing my own violin, I’m the blood and the shark, I’m the strings and the bow. I welcome my grief with a grin, while I peel off my bark, because it’s all that I know. I atoned for what was within, and each X is a mark, three scars from counting my crows in Roman numerals. Here I lie alongside my sin, though I’m dressed less than sharp, I watched myself sink below as a guest at my funeral.
