## Las ballenas Según las leyendas, dos grandes ballenas, Batú y Mautu, trajeron en su lomo a los humanos hasta _Hua Tarakona_ y crearon todas las islas del gran archipiélago de las burbujas de aire de su respiración. Rápidamente, los humanos bajaron de la espalda de las ballenas y poblaron esas islas. Las dos grandes ballenas procrearon y dieron luz a todas las ballenas del mar y tras esto se hundieron bajo el mar. Según las leyendas, sus respiraciones crean las mareas. La exhalación de Batú crea la pleamar de noche y su inhalación la bajamar de día. Al exhalar Mautu crea la pleamar de día y al inhalar la bajamar de noche. > Aunque las ballenas son mamíferos que respiran aire, para los isleños son peces y respiran agua. Al ser descendientes de Batú y Mautu, las ballenas son sagradas para los habitantes del archipiélago y no se cazan. Solo se permite «rescatar» sus cuerpos muertos de las playas, ya que se considera que la ballena ha donado su cuerpo a los humanos. > **Conceptos de teología:** Una de las preguntas que se hacen los _kahunas_ es si las ballenas nos transportaban o simplemente éramos un parásito más como pueden ser los moluscos que se pegan a su dura piel. La verdad que cada punto de vista ofrece una visión del mito de la creación muy diferente. Los primeros humanos son conocidos como _hoa koholā_ (compañeros de las ballenas) y son los más poderosos y reverenciados _aumakuas_ (espíritus de los ancestros). se dice que las siguen sirviendo quitándoles crustáceos de su gruesa piel y alimentándolos con historias de los _haukas_ (viajeros).
