This traditional Indian decorative art form known as Rangoli or Kolam is typically created on the floor or ground at the entrance of homes, especially during Hindu festivals and celebrations such as Pongal today, 14 January. This specific design shown uses coloured powders and features a central flower motif with intricate patterns around it. Rangoli or Kolam are traditionally made from materials such as coloured rice, dry flour, colored sand or flower petals, even though some painted versions are beginning to emerge. Over the semi-open grille gate leading into the home is a circular concave mirror - and also a conventional mirror on the back wall - wherein the photographer was unwittingly reflected!
