On This Date: January 26, 1982 #OnThisDate in 1982, at about 6am, Rebecca Smith, 61 but thought to be in her late 60s, was found dead in her cardboard box home on Tenth Avenue and 17th Street in Chelsea. The Office of Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause of her death to be hypothermia, exposure to cold resulting in abnormally low body temperature, when the body loses more heat than it can produce.
