🌎 Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno) The male Resplendent Quetzal is a stunning iridescent green with a red belly and an exceptionally long, flowing green tail train. Females are duller with a shorter tail. Quetzals inhabit montane cloud forests from Southern Mexico to Western Panama. Generally shy and quiet, they become more vocal and perform elaborate displays during the breeding season. They mainly eat fruit, especially wild avocados. Two subspecies are recognised. 2.5 Flash (Edited) Conservation status: Near Threatened (IUCN 3.1) Fun fact: The Resplendent Quetzal is the National Bird of Guatemala. Its image is on the country's flag and coat of arms, and the national currency is called the Quetzal.
