#RetinaUK50 #TeamRetinaUK #5KADayInMay #Accessible A photo of a supporter, smiling in her Retina UK t-shirt, with her dog. The caption reads: “5K A Day In May is back for 2026!”
#RetinaUK50 #InheritedSightLoss #Opticians A photo of a lady trying on some glasses at an opticians, with the caption: “Could your local optician support Retina UK?”.
A quote from a medical researcher: ''I think the biggest challenge is general quality of life - people regard sight and I think rightly so as the most important sense, if you think of how life is without sight how many limitations do people face, that plus despite its widespread presence especially with ageing population, we don’t yet have truly efficient treatments for the most severe for eye pathologies. Professor Paraoan - Manchester Metropolitan University."
Today is the start of Retinitis Pigmentosa Awareness Month! 👁️
If there are aspects of inherited sight loss that you think are important for the wider public to be more aware of, please share them with Retina UK in the comments below! 😊

My last day posting for 50 days for #RetinaUK50 If you would like to know who they help and how please visit Retinauk.org.uk and maybe donate if you can.
Photo of a completed candle in a jar with a golden lid. The label on the front says Smokin' Bee. The perfume is honey and tobacco. Also in the picture is a bottle of perfume, a cardboard pot which the candle was mixed in, some pieces of wood with a hole in the middle used to hold the wick in place and stir. They are all sitting on a white piece of paper. In the background you can see a large table and people sitting around it also making candles
What a lovely day at #SomersetHouse in #London with Ambustum.co.uk and @retinauk.bsky.social Peer Support Group. Lots of #Blind peeps making #Candles. What could possibly go wrong. Nothing as it happens😊 #RetinaUK50
A Tesco lorry parked completely on the pavement
A lorry parked off on the pavement, next to 2 wheelie bins next to a car with its front sticking out from the driveway onto the pavement. The pavement is completely blocked.
A lorry parked on double yellow lines mostly on the pavement. Although Mabel and I got passed, a mobility scooter, a wheelchair or even a pushchair wouldn't this is a very busy road.
Just 3 of the many obstacles my #GuideDog and I faced today. I have no words. #RetinaUK50 #PavementParking
View from the entrance of a local park. There is a path winding to the left then winding off to the distance. On the right there is a fence which follows the path a little away. On the left of the path there is grass with leaves on it and trees. On the right of the path there is grass with less leaves and some trees dotted here and there. In the distance you can see the fields of the park, blue sky and white cloud clouds. You cannot see the Sun, but you can see the shadows on the grass where it is peeping through the trees.
It's a great feeling when you manage a walk in the park with your #Dog inbetween showers. It's much harder when you have #LowVision and it's rainy, windy, dark or even too sunny, especially this time of the year. Not great for a #photo though so here's one I took earlier in the week. #RetinaUK50
Eye tests are important for everyone, even if you're blind! They do not only see if you need glasses, but pick up other eye conditions, diabetes & tumours. For some the eye test is free and you may even get money towards glasses. What are you waiting for? #RetinaUK50 @retinauk.bsky.social
Christmas is a difficult time for me for all sorts of reasons. But mostly because every year I forget how hard it is to write cards&wrap presents now. I still imagine I can do it like when I was 20. I forget how long it takes, especially with time wasted playing hunt the tape etc. #RetinaUK50 #Xmas
Busy day today including recording for @rnibradio.bsky.social I love volunteering for them and find it both challenging and rewarding. #RetinaUK50 @retinauk.bsky.social #Radio #Volunteering
Front view showing a car on the pavement next to a house where there is work being done and a pile of debris where pedestrians would need to walk🤦🏽♀️
Back for you showing my Guide Dogs view as we approached. Car completely on the pavement next to a lamp post on the left, a very busy road on the left. When you get closer so you think you can go round it on the right but then there is a pile of dangerous debris.
This is completely unacceptable. Very busy main road. Double yellow Lines. Pedestrians forced into the road or into the property where there is a pile of debris with nails sticking out! #Maidstone #PavementParking

Photo of a black swan gliding on the water seen through a black fence. The Swan has a red beak.
Although I am registered #blind in the UK, I still have a small tunnel of central vision. This means I can still work out some photos but not all. Many people can't see photos at all. So PLEASE use #AltText to make your photos accessible. #RetinaUK50 #Dogs #Cats #Birds #Photography
Golden Lab rolling in the grass. She is on her back with her legs in the air. In the background there are trees of various sizes, a blue sky with white clouds, a streak of white aeroplane smoke and the sun peeking through.
Golden Labrador sitting on grass facing the camera with her tongue hanging out. Behind her is a line of trees, some still with leaves. The sky is blue and the sun is peeking through causing shadows on the grass.
Managed to catch the weather just right for our #Sunday free run. Although the sun can be a real problem for me this time of year, it is a lovely reminder of how beautiful the world can be. We need that right now. #RetinaUK50
Me standing next to a close up photo of water taken from a bridge. The mixture of the reflection of the bridge in the ripples of the water and the foam make an interesting pattern. The photo is black and white.
10 years ago this month the sensory #photography group I belonged to had an exhibition in a local museum. I still use some of the techniques taught today. #Blind people take photos for the same reasons as everyone else. To share their experiences with others. #RetinaUK50 @retinauk.bsky.social
Photo of my eldest child sitting at a table on the train. They are looking out the window sipping a drink. In front of them is a coffee mug with a caramel waffle on the top, a pair of glasses and a rail ticket. The shadows on the table show that it is sunny outside. The caption reads 'on our way to Cambridge to take part in some research. Lovely and sunny here!'
Exactly 10 years ago today my eldest and I were on our way to Cambridge to take part in Research. I like to do this whenever I can. Just because I don't work, doesn't mean I'm not a useful member of society. #RetinaUK50 #Research #Blind @retinauk.bsky.social
First day out in the icy cold today. #Coffee with an old friend followed by #bus trip to a friends house. Glad to be offered a lift home as I'd forgotten how early it gets dark now and the little sight I have disappears with low light. Every year!🤦🏽♀️ #RetinaUK50 @retinauk.bsky.social
Golden Labrador sitting facing the camera on a mixture of grass and fallen leaves. In the background to the left is a tree with lots of branches but no leaves. To the right is a short tree with lots of brown leaves still on it.
#Winter has arrived. Very windy in the park. Mabel enjoyed her free run though. Managed to avoid the rain at least. #RetinaUK50 #GuideDog #Dogs #photo
Nice relaxing photo of the sunset view from my friends house in Sicily. In the foreground there are a variety of plants all looking very black as it is dark. In the background is a grey and orange sky with some pink and grey clouds.
Quiet day home alone yesterday after a busy few days. Although I can do challenging things and push outside my comfort zone, eventually I need a day or more to reset, give my eyes a rest and prevent myself from being overwhelmed. #RetinaUK50 #Wellbeing #SelfCare #photo
Finally watched this morning. Bit of an emotional rollercoaster for me. Very good film. #RealLife #RetinaUK50 @retinauk.bsky.social
Many people who live with #RP also live with #CharlesBonnetSyndrome. This #CBSAwarenessDay why not become an #EsmesUmbrella member and find out more? #RetinaUK50 @retinauk.bsky.social
So finally got around to buying the #audible version of 'Keep Laughing' by #ChrisMcCausland Now to pluck up the courage to start reading it. It took me some time to get used to 'hearing' books but now I love giving my eyes a rest and listening to them. #RetinaUK50 @retinauk.bsky.social
A silver car is parked completely on the pavement right next to the grass verge.
For some reason there are often cars parked completely on the pavement here. My #GuideDog is forced to choose between taking me over the uneven and potentially slippery grass verge or into the road. We usually choose the road. We shouldn't have to make this choice. #RetinaUK50 #RoadSafety
Selfie of me and my 2 children. I'm on the left with blue glasses and a yellow coat. Youngest in the middle with short brown hair, no glasses. Eldest on the right with mid length wavy auburn hair and black glasses.
Had a lovely couple of days in #Farnham with my children. So many places #dog friendly including our hotel. Made life a lot easier for #Guidedog Mabel and I. Allowed us more #family time too. #RetinaUK50
Golden Labrador laying in harness with her head facing the camera just in front of a Christmas light arch in the shape of a square present with a bow on top. Behind the arch is a Christmas tree.
#Farnham is beautiful and lit up nicely at the moment. Christmas lights can be challenging if you have #LowVision but they can also make good reference points and make dark areas lighter. To take this #photo I got down low and took several to make sure the whole tree was in pic. #RetinaUK50
Photo of a grey bouldering wall with holds of various colours shapes and sizes on it. I am at the top of the corner of the wall probably wondering how I get back down! I am wearing a red top, blue denim shorts and black leggings. With rock climbing shoes and a chalk bag around my waist.
Really missed doing stuff like this this year. Will try and get back to it next year. Although it's challenging with #LowVision it really helped my physical and mental health. #RetinaUK50 @retinauk.bsky.social
#photo #Bouldering
I often hear a #Robin chirping from a neighbours tree, but can never see it. Hubby told me it was at the top of the tree & I managed to capture him (the Robin, not hubby). It's not the most fantastic photo but was really difficult for me to get due to my #RP #photo #RetinaUK50 @retinauk.bsky.social
I'm really looking forward to reading Chris McCausland's book 'Keep Laughing' but for me it will not be an easy read. Although we both have #RP I still have a small tunnel of vision, which I will eventually lose. So it will be a bit like looking into the future. #RetinaUK50 @retinauk.bsky.social
When you can't see very well and you take a sip of water and realise a piece of kibble has somehow ended up in it🤦🏽♀️ Thankfully didn't swallow the kibble, but the water did not taste nice😬
