This is from a season-end email from the #NCC that they sent out today. This season was 56 days, which is pretty good for recent winters.

It looks like this will be the end of #skating on the #RideauCanal after today with a big spring melt coming, so I got in one last #skate today. The surface was rated "good" but was actually quite poor and bumpy. Not good for skating fast.

Has anyone been #skating on the #RideauCanal this morning? My wife is committed to getting out.
The rationale seems to be that since the ice condition was already "poor" this morning, which is the lowest quality, it can't get any worse.

A BRP Can-Am Defender 4X4 on the canal. These are used by NCC and contractors for delivering wood, picking up garbage, etc.

Some scenes from my solo #skate on the #RideauCanal today. The temperature was about -7°C with a windchill of -14. I skated end-to-end and back (incl Dow's Lake) for 15.6 km covered.
Northbound, mostly into the wind was 35 minutes and southbound was 27 minutes.

I personally don't #skate when it is snow covered as you can't see the cracks and bumps and that increases the accident potential greatly.

Some photos from my solo #skate today on the #RideauCanal. It was mostly overcast and about -4°C with a -11 windchill.
I skated end-to-end and back again for 15.6 km covered. The wind made a big difference, as I was 40 minutes northbound and 25 minutes back south.

"ICE UPDATE Temporary closure of the Rideau Canal Skateway at 10 pm The full length of the Rideau Canal Skateway will temporarily close tonight, Monday, February 16, at 10 p.m. The recent and upcoming warmer temperatures and several sunny days have impacted the ice surface. This precautionary closure will help protect the Skateway and give our teams the opportunity to smooth the ice once conditions improve. The Rideau Canal Skateway has been open for 41 days since December 31st, 2025. To date, we’ve welcomed more than 785,000 visits, including approximately 141,000 visits this past weekend."
