Today is the International Day of Action for Rivers
Rivers represent less than 1% of the Earth’s liquid surface water, yet they support nearly 50% of all known fish species. They are the ultimate biological overachievers. 🐟🏆

A sad indictment of a nation with a pervasive culture of human entitlement. But the Earth is not a food pantry for humankind. Its ecosystems can’t simply be commodified for profit or recreation.

🗓️Join us on the 29th October, for a community gathering to learn about the water quality results carried out by citizen scientists across the Ock catchment and a stretch of the Thames.
Come along! 😉

A new ‘Rivers at Risk’ report from Campaign for National Parks, in partnership with the Rivers Trust, reveals that 57% of rivers in National Parks fail to meet good ecological status.
This is not only a national concern, but is affecting our west country rivers too.

Our ops team have been out removing in river barriers again this month by taking out this redundant ford crossing.
Although barriers such as this are not a huge impact as single barriers, accumulatively they can have a major impact on fish and river health.

Team Ripple Effect at the Houses of Parliament to celebrate our river science project and demand far better care for rivers and regulation of pollution. In the photo are a group of eight people - seven women and one man- holding glasses of wine and smiling or laughing for the selfie. Project Ripple Effect is a citizen science research project on the upper Medway, a partnership between University of Sussex and riends of the River Medway.
View over the Thames from the Houses of Parliament as the sun sets. The river is to our left, immediately over a pale stone parapet with an ornamental lantern on a metal pole in the centre of the photo. To the right, the walls of parliament, highly decorated pale stone. In the distance, the high rises of the city glowing in the setting sun.
View from the bank of the Thames from the Houses of Parliament, looking west to the London Eye and Waterloo bridge. The sun is setting and an ornamental lantern in the foreground is lit, the old City Hall in the background is glowing in low red light.
Ripple Effect team members taking photos of Big Ben. It's 9.30 pm and it's glowing gold in the late sun - and for the first time in a long time has no scaffolding!
