This has been quite a gay week, with many people coming and going to lunch and tea ; one day we had the Land Commissioners, and I must tell you an absurd story of Mr. I , the American Commissioner, and Louis. Mr. I happened to tell us that one of his daughters had been born on Christmas Day, and always complained bitterly that she had never had a birthday present in her life, and for all practical purposes did not possess a birthday at all. Louis promptly declared that he really had no further use for his, which only served nowadays to call attention to his increasing years, so he would willingly make it over to Miss I. At once a sort of legal document was drawn up, solemnly handing over the 13th November to her 'for her sole use and behoof henceforward as a birthday, and the paper was despatched to Vermont with all due formalities! . . . I, of course, pointed out to Louis that in future he need not expect anything more in the shape of birthday presents or congratulations.
That day Robert Louis Stevenson gave his birthday to a kid and even wrote up the paperwork to confirm it :) This was written up in a letter from his mother to her friend

A small, Delft blue acrylic painting on a sanded-off paperback copy of Illustrated Classic Editions' Kidnapped. It shows two boys leaping in the air, the higher one dodging a kick from the lower, cartoonish in a Dutch tile way.
Spent forever looking for a decent jpg or tiff of this blue book tile, Alan Will Not Leave David, for my agent. Days later, I noticed the original had been sitting on my bookshelf the whole damn time.

The last article I wrote in 2019 concerned #RobertLouisStevenson and his well-known short story #ThestrangecaseofDrJekyllandMrHyde. It's a classic and if you haven't read it yet, you should:

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Respected Paternal Relative, I write to make a request of the most modest nature. Every year I have cost you an enormous - nay, elephantine - sum of money for drugs and physician's fees, and the most expensive time of the twelve months was March. But this year, the biting Oriental blasts, the howling tempests, and the general ailments of the human race have been successfully braved by yours truly. Does not this deserve renumeration? I appeal to your charity, I appeal to your generosity, I appeal to your justice, I appeal to your accounts, I appeal, in fine, to your purse. My sense of generosity forbids the receipt of more - my sense of justice forbids the receipt of less - than half a crown. Greeting from, Sir, your most affectionate and needy son, R. Stevenson
Today I'm making it a goal to share the love of Robert Louis Stevenson as much as I can, by way of sharing his letters, because I adore him.
This one was written when he was 15.

Una de les novel·les que han fascinat més generacions de lectors joves—i no tant—, que l’han llegida sota els llençols.
Les il·lustracions de Leonard Beard que enriqueixen aquesta nova edició la fan una petita joia.

Whenever the moon and stars are set, Whenever the wind is high, All night long in the dark and wet, A man goes riding by. Late in the night when the fires are out, Why does he gallop and gallop about? Whenever the trees are crying aloud, And ships are tossed at sea, By, on the highway, low and loud, By at the gallop goes he. By at the gallop he goes, and then By he comes back at the gallop again.
