A gap in a grassy bank, wide enough to drive a cart though. It is in an upland environment, on a bright sunny day.
This gap in a grassy bank might not look much, but it is the north western gateway into Epiacum fort, high in the Pennines near Alston - a landscape rich in minerals, with a long history of mining. I hear it isn't always sunny, there. #RomanFortThursday #RomanBritian

Wroxeter was once the 5th most important Roman city in Britannia and called Viroconium. Some people also believe that in the dark ages Wroxeter was the city of King Arthur and called Camelot. #Wroxeter #viroconium #romanbritian #romanhistory

Hands down the best Roman site in Britain, the complicated and spectacular Tomen y Mur, Gwynedd, Wales, with its Norman motte, huge parade grounds, and superb little arena. Absolute heaven, if a little windy.

The rather inauspicious yet incredible Roman amphitheatre at Moridunum, modern-day Carmarthen in Wales. It uses the local topography as part of the construction. It was here, back in the 80s, that I fell in love with Roman history. π
