A sleepy village now but a bustling metropolis in Roman times. Have a look around with Anne.

A large, robust stone font on an octagonal stone base, set into a tiled floor. Its shape is clearly that of a column base, but upside down. (Make like Emlyn Hughes in the picture round on 'A Question of Sport' and all will become clear.)
The stonking great font at St. Andrew's, #Wroxeter - made from an upturned Roman column base. One of many pieces of re-used stone in a remarkable church. (A look around it adds a lot to a visit to the nearby 'Roman City' site.)

Some photos from Wroxeter Roman Ruins in Shropshire this morning. Just a short trip out as I wanted to see it in the snow. #Wroxeter #WroxeterRomanCity #RomanBritain #RomanRuins #RomanHistory #Shropshire #WestMidlands #England
The view through a doorway flanked by two large wooden doors, swung open and towards the camera. Outside, two large stone columns with chunky square capitals frame the view of a grassed area, with ruined stonework beyond and a hill on the horizon. There are people visible inspecting the ruins. The photo is taken from a reconstructed villa, completed in 2011. It was designed by Professor Dai Morgan Evans and based on evidence from the site.
For my first post & first #AdoorableThursday of the year, here's the view from the reconstructed Roman villa at #Wroxeter: it looks out onto what was the forum and across the road to the bath house. You can just see the Wrekin in the distance. All the best for 2026! #RomanBritain #Shropshire

A young archaeologist in a blue hat carrying a ranging rod is talk to a group of visitors on the right edge of the photograph. Behind him on the left edge is the Old Work, a large piece of surviving Roman wall. In the foreground bottom left is a bearded man with a "killer spray" on his back dampening down some of the features.
Ahhh the memories! Here is me giving a guided tour of Phil Barker's excavations when I was 18 in 1983. #Wroxeter #Shropshire #RomanArchaeology #excavation

Recent excavations have uncovered remarkable insights into life on the fringes of #Wroxeter: archaeologists worked alongside volunteers & members of the public revealing an Iron Age roundhouse, a #Roman industrial complex & a shrine.

Back of the circular silver mirror. There is a decorative broder of leaves and wreaths. The handles are intertwined like a knot of rope. There are also four circular floral additions to the handles.
One for #FindsFriday The amazing Roman silver mirror from Wroxeter now in the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery. We are looking at the back of the mirror at the handles. 📷 mine. It's not as sharp as I would like as it is photographed through glass. #roman #archaeology #mirror #wroxeter #shropshire

Wroxeter Roman town, with the Wrekin behind.
Wroxeter is situated on the northern end of Watlin Street in Shropshire and was the 5th largest Roman town in Britain. The Wrekin has an Iron Age hill fort on its summit. #Wroxeterromantown #wroxeter #Wrekin #Shropshire #england #romanhistory #history

Going through old boxes and found some shots I took whilst digging at #Wroxeter in 1984, now there’s a Roman replica villa where my tent stood, happy days #archaeology
A black and white aerial photograph of some overgrown ruins, surrounded by farmland. A road runs across the bottom. Historic England Archive, EPW028866.
A 1929 aerial shot of the central part of #Wroxeter Roman City. #WatlingStreet runs across heading toward River Severn, out of shot to the right. The Forum (note the part columns in the trench at the bottom) had been excavated just six years earlier. #RomanRoadsFriday #RomanBritain #Shropshire

Wroxeter was once the 5th most important Roman city in Britannia and called Viroconium. Some people also believe that in the dark ages Wroxeter was the city of King Arthur and called Camelot. #Wroxeter #viroconium #romanbritian #romanhistory
