'Christ from the Bewcastle Cross', from the Millennium window at St. Cuthbert's Church, Bewcastle; designed in homage to the magnificent 7th/8th century decorated cross in the churchyard.

A Happy Easter, to all who celebrate.

The 'Bayeux Tapestry of England'.

All Saints Church, Claverley, houses a remarkable 13th-century wall painting of over 15 metres. Its rare depiction of knights makes it unique in Britain. Thought to show the battle of Vices and Virtues, it is truly remarkable.

Whenever I go church crawling, I obsessively look for graffiti. Recently, in All Saints Church, Claverley, I hit the jackpot when I found this fantastic little guy ✨️

A colour landscape aspect photograph looking across the rooftops of a large town centre on a sunny day. A tall, thin church steeple and a separate (and slightly lower) church tower are prominent in the distance. The dominant colours are pale blues and greys in the sky, and shades of brick red and industrial greys in the buildings in the foreground.

An unusual view of the elegant spire at St. Elphin's, #Warrington: at 281 feet, one of the tallest in an English parish church. Mediaeval origins, C19 restoration. The tower to the right is at St. Mary's, formerly Benedictine, now a 'shrine'.

Composition includes intricately carved marble panels on the side of a large baptismal font and on an altar. There are also metal candlesticks and a crucifix on the altar, a wooden throne behind it, a free standing candlestick, marble paving stones, and steps with colored inlay forming simple geometric patterns.

I take the "crawling" part of #ChurchCrawling very literally.

A recent visit to my local Churches Conservation Trust church, St. Petrock’s Church, Parracombe, inspired this new work.

To me it is one of the gems of Exmoor. If you’re ever in the area do make sure to visit this wonderful place and be inspired yourself. #art #churchcrawling

Claquato Church is the oldest standing church in Washington State, built in 1858. Claquato became a ghost town after the railroad went through nearby Centralia and Chehalis instead.

On the occupied lands of the Chehalis and Cowlitz tribes.

A large, robust stone font on an octagonal stone base, set into a tiled floor. Its shape is clearly that of a column base, but upside down. (Make like Emlyn Hughes in the picture round on 'A Question of Sport' and all will become clear.)

The stonking great font at St. Andrew's, #Wroxeter - made from an upturned Roman column base. One of many pieces of re-used stone in a remarkable church. (A look around it adds a lot to a visit to the nearby 'Roman City' site.)

The stupendous north doorway into the Lady Chapel, #Glastonbury Abbey. 12th century, funded by Henry II. The sculptures show scenes from the Virgin's life (though you would need the eyes of crow to be able to tell that from this snapshot). #AddorableThursday #ChurchCrawling

St Oswald’s Durham It is lovely in its simplicity.. a contrast to the undoubted splendour of the cathedral But it has an original William Morris/Ford. Maddox Brown window and a lovely church organ
Impressive in its own way. A lovely surprise

The West end of a very old church building, viewed from up close. A rough stone tower is flanked by two later aisles, each of different design, giving an asymmetrical appearance.

For #TowerTuesday, the wonderful 10th century example at the Church of St. Mary, Deerhurst, #Gloucestershire. Substantial parts of the building are pre-Conquest, and with another Saxon church 100-odd yards away (Odda's Chapel), the place is a time-machine. #ChurchCrawling
