As you know, the GD regime rolled out a new version of the #RussianLaw on foreign agents, calling it FARA and claiming it’s a direct copy of the American FARA. Well, you decide. 2/

The so-called FARA (an even harsher version of the #RussianLaw on Foreign Agents) will be applied to individuals employed at foreign embassies and international organizations, according to sources. This is the regime's way of controlling Georgians working for these entities. 1/2

5/10: On April 15, GD passed amendments to the Law on Grants, requiring government approval for organization funding. This, alongside #RussianLaw and broadcasters’ amendments, threatens civil society’s independence, echoing Russia’s playbook.

5/ GD rammed through a grants law, requiring government approval for organizations to get funding. Add #RussianLaw, the foreign agents act, and broadcasters’ amendments, and it’s a death grip on media and civil society. Georgia’s free voices are gasping.

Just in: GD has adopted a new "Foreign Agents Law," a stricter version of the #RussianLaw, which now includes criminal charges for individuals and mandates labeling as a "foreign agent."

Yesterday, they also passed restrictive media laws, significantly curtailing our rights.

The truth is, no matter what kind of law GD passes, it will be a #RussianLaw. It could be the most rational, just, and necessary law on paper, but in the hands of an authoritarian regime—without citizens having access to a free judiciary—it becomes just another tool to suppress dissent.

3/4: This new law feels like the final blow to silence dissent for good. The #RussianLaw, enacted in 2024, forced NGOs and media with over 20% foreign funding to register as “foreign agents.” This new law, set to be adopted by GD, builds on that repression.

3/ In 2023, as massive protests forced GD to withdraw the controversial "foreign agents" law (aka #RussianLaw), the government recognized that traditional media control was insufficient to shape public opinion—particularly among younger audiences on platforms like TikTok.

7/ While opposition TV channels are counting their last days, funding from foreign organizations is vital for Georgian media, which is already struggling to survive because of the #RussianLaw.

Additionally, GD plans to adopt an even stricter version of the #RussianLaw to suppress civil society. 3/3
