In Hanoi, Vietnam, with the International Palm Society for the Biennial. I’m enjoying seeing magnificent specimens of Citrus x microcarpa, the calamondin, left over from Lunar New Year. (The palms are coming) #IPSinVietnam #Rutaceae

Endemic to the Karri forests of south west Western Australia, the leaves of this understorey shrub resemble that of an oak tree… hence the name (Quercus = oak)

A digression on Rutaceae taxonomy: Cneorum is a genus of 2 species of shrubs. One species is from Europe (C. tricoccon, pictured); the other is from the Canary Islands. A third species was described from Cuba but was later determined to be the European species introduced. #Rutaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

🔥 Keep away from open flame: The foliage of Dictamnus albus, a plant from the Mediterranean region & Asia, has a lemony fragrance. The essential oils volatilize so readily that on a warm, windless evening, you can ignite the oils in the air above the plant.🔥 #Rutaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Subfamily Spathelioideae has just 1 genus, Spathelia, native to the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica & Belize. They have palm-like growth habits. Like other Rutaceae, they have distinctive defensive chemistry: Spathelia spp. have alkaloids. 📷: Peter Zika CCBYNC4 #Rutaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

A digression on dispersal: Here are some open follicles of Zanthoxylum spinosum. The glossy seeds catch the eyes of birds, who (perhaps) mistake them for juicy, black berries. The birds consume the seeds and then disperse them undigested & unharmed. #dispersal #Rutaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Rutaceae phytochemistry: The interesting numbing sensation of Sichuan pepper (Zanthoxylum spp.) is caused by hydroxy-α-sanshool, a fatty acid amide similar in structure to capsaicin from chili pepper. The chemical is found in the fruits (follicles). 📷: Ibán CCBYNCSA2 #Rutaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Certain pharmaceuticals can’t be taken with grapefruit juice. Why? Furanocoumarins in the juice interfere with the gut & liver enzymes that activate/deactivate certain drugs. The interaction can lead to too much or not enough drugs in our system. 📷: Mike CCBYNCSA2 #Citrus #Rutaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Along with essential oils, limes have furanocoumarins in their rind that cause photodermatitis. When exposed to UV, the chemicals crosslink with the DNA of our skin cells, causing cell death. Occupational hazard of poolside bartenders! 📷: Neil Staeck CCBYNC2 #Citrus #Rutaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

The flowers of Rutaceae typically have stamens with thick filaments in a ring around a conspicuous nectar-secreting disc at the base of the ovary and a broad, conspicuous stigma, just what we see in these Citrus × limon 'Meyer' flowers. #Rutaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Up this week: Rutaceae, a family that includes more than just Citrus (although that genus is especially important economically). Most of the Citrus in our markets are interspecific hybrids that were domesticated in Asia in ancient times. #Rutaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

These prickles have fooled me. They are in a similar position as stipules, but they’re not stipules. There is no homology. They are just prickles. The Rutaceae are exstipulate (lack stipules) but are plenty prickly. This is Zanthoxylum simulans. #stipule #Rutaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Leaf vocabulary 4: TERNATE describes a compound leaf of 3 leaflets. It could be interpreted as either a pinnately or palmately compound leaf. We can’t be certain, so we use the word ternate or trifoliolate (NOT trifoliate). 📷: Choisya ternata #Rutaceae #botany 🌾🧪🌱
