Worth noting that the new slot may be 90 minutes - but #DramaOn3 could be any length - right up to three hours.
Not sure what this will mean for #Shakespeare on radio. Shorter plays or two-parters, presumably...

Just because the battle to keep #DramaOn3 has been lost, it doesn't mean we should stop fighting for #AudioDrama on the #BBC. It's been heavily cut over recent years - don't let anything more go!

#RadioDrama on #BBCRadio3 is going even more quickly than we thought... It had been suggested that #DramaOn3 wouldn't be axed until April. Actually it looks like the last play will be broadcast a week on Sunday, as the slot disappears after that...

Pickup's progress

While many people, hearing that Ronald Pickup is to play Hamlet on Radio 3 (Sunday 6.50) may well ask Who?', to regular National Theatre goers the casting will come as no surprise. Indeed, if you've followed his progress from walk-on parts six years ago to a succession of memorable performances, you may wonder why he hasn't played Hamlet before.

Pickup (above) himself gives the suggestion a nervous smile. 'Just because I've been lucky enough to play leading parts at the National doesn't mean I expect good roles elsewhere.'

Playing Hamlet on the radio is of particular significance to him. 'Where I was brought up, in Chester, there wasn't a lot of theatre; it was listening to radio that gave me the urge to be an actor.'

Ronald Pickup on his role as #Hamlet in 1971 (being repeated this Sunday).
The importance of #RadioDrama is clear - without it, where will the next generation of actors come from if they don't have access to theatre?

BBC radio drama is in grave danger. Without it we may lose the next generation of writing talent Hundreds of hours of original plays have been cut from the corporation’s programming in recent years. If the trend continues, a valuable training ground for writers will be lost

An important piece in today’s Observer from Katie Hims on why cuts to audio drama are so damaging - to writers, audiences and the wider cultural ecosystem in the UK

now more than ever, it's vital that public institutions support - and, crucially, PAY - artists from all backgrounds. and you might be thinking, "lauren, you're an american, why do YOU care?"

Over the years, I've enjoyed many a BBC audio drama - Deadhouse, Weird Tales, Charles Paris Mysteries, The Interrogation, The Corrupted, to name but a few. Huge shame they're cutting the drama budget. #SADattheBBC

I can't overstate the positive change this has been, and it never would have happened but for BBC radio drama and Radio 4 etc. being accessible worldwide. That's worth the licence fee forever. @societyofauthors.bsky.social #SADatTheBBC This was the start; see worstjouney.com for the present.
