The seed oil of Paullinia cupana has cyanolipids that ARE cyanogenic. Has anyone tested the seeds of Acer or Aesculus for cyanolipids? They weren’t included in the family in the 1970s, when cyanolipid research was popular. 📷: Paullinia cupana Bernard Dupont CCBYSA2 #Sapindaceae #Botany 🌾🧪

Anisophylly means “unequal leaves” & refers to the production of unequal leaves continuously & concurrently (not a growth stage). Maples (this is Acer rubrum) produce a pair of leaves at each node, but one leaf has a longer stalk than the other. #Sapindaceae #anisophylly #Acer #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Another way of enticing an animal to eat a seed is to give the seed an aril, a fleshy outgrowth of the ovule stalk or its attachment to the ovule. Harpullia solomonensis has fruits that open to reveal shiny black seeds almost completely covered with red arils. #Sapindaceae #dispersal #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

If you live where maples grow, check out their leaves (before they fall). The pair of leaves at each node always has one leaf with a shorter petiole than the other leaf. This is Acer rubrum. I wonder if all Acer species do this. 🤔 #Sapindaceae #anisophylly #maple #Acer #botany 🌱🧪🌾

Maples (Acer spp.; #Sapindaceae) have schizocarpic samaras. A schizocarp is a fruit that breaks apart at maturity. Each Acer fruit has 2 winged carpels. The paired samaras break apart & spin to the ground. The wing slows the descent, while the wind moves the #fruit laterally. #samara #Botany 🌾🧪🌱
Photo of a large tree along a paved path in Kew Gardens. The tree has a low crown and hundreds of inflorescences of white flowers.
Plate of two images. On the left is an artist’s illustration of the flowers. On the right, is a close-up photo of a panicle of flowers. The buds and axes are pink. The petals are white, and two dorsal petals have a bright yellow central spot.
Aesculus indica, which I first saw along Banks Avenue a Kew Gardens, is a superb ornamental. It was first introduced to England from the Himalayan region in the 1850s & was named (comb. nov.) and illustrated in Curtis's Botanical Magazine in 1858. #Sapindaceae #buckeye #Kew #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪
Photo of the panicle of white flowers. Some have yellow central spots, but most have pink spots.
The flowers of Aesculus hippocastanum change color. Virgin, unvisited flowers have yellow central spots on their two dorsal petals, but in pollinated flowers, the spots turn pink. This maximizes the floral display, & pollinators don’t waste their time on old flowers. #Sapindaceae #Botany 🌾🧪
Photo of the terminal panicles and foliage of the lower branches of a small tree. The flowers are peachy pink and yellow.
This specimen Duke Gardens may represent Aesculus × mutabilis, which is a natural hybrid of A. pavia × A. sylvatica. It has more of a tree-like stature & flowers that are intermediate in color between the two. #Sapindaceae #hybrid #buckeye #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪

Aesculus hippocastanum (=“horse chestnut”) was introduced from the Balkans in the 16th Century & is now widely planted along the streets of #Paris. I was charmed by the seeds when I saw them for the 1st time in 1988 (when we had paper maps & guides! ) #Sapindaceae #buckeye #Botany #PlantScience 🌾🧪
