Ulrike Ottinger is a groundbreaking German filmmaker and photographer whose work boldly celebrates gender fluidity, queer identity, and radical self-expression. Since the 1970s, she’s crafted visionary, avant-garde films that challenge norms and give space to lesbian and feminist voices often erased in cinema.

Image: Madame X - An Absolute Ruler is a German film from 1977. A mesmerizing sapphic cult film set aboard the ship Orlando. The film follows a group of women and gender nonconforming characters on a surreal, transformative journey through shifting realities. Featuring Ulrike Ottinger as Orlando alongside the iconic Tabea Blumenschein as Madame X. Even the American dancer, choreographer and film maker Yvonne Rainer plays in the film!

Image description: Two people are shown on the deck of a boat against a clear blue sky. The person on the left has long, wavy hair, wears a long black glove, and holds a curved knife in their raised hand, positioned behind another person standing in a frontal pose. The second person has slicked-back hair, pale makeup, and wears a shiny black and silver costume with pointed shoulder accents and decorative stitching.

Here's a series of four posters made for a short film I'm working on with my partner, @ace-in-space.bsky.social. I wrote the screenplay for a contest that @cofcharleston.bsky.social was hosting. There will be more posters in the coming weeks.
