I can see her tunneling into a heated rant, so I tug the side of the shirt free from her skirt for her attention. "You mean, you don't think I can do it?" She flinches and swallows under my gaze. There's no teasing or gushing here. I'm being sincere, and she knows it. "It's that you're an airhead," she answers. "But only for you.”

“I am Melchior. I am Darklord of the Empire and Champion of the Shadow over the Sun.” Melchior turned and looked at Dinah where she stood, teeth and fists both clenched. “I know to you this makes me the enemy. I know your mother has raised you to hate me. I am the villain. I accept this. But I am a necessary villain. The heroes have failed. I failed. The world will fall to the Darkness unless something greater than the heroes takes action. I have chosen to be that something.” “You have empowered the Shadow over the Sun.” Dinah said, no looking at him. “You are as bad as any Darkness.” Melchior shook his head. “I’m not. Under my rule, the world will survive. Under the Darkness, it will die. I am life. It is a thankless job. People cannot see the sacrifice that I am making on their behalf. They only see the sacrifices I demand of them. They don’t see that these sacrifices keep the Darkness at bay. Their sacrifices keep them alive.”
