In the Still of the Night Her voice is soft, sweet, and slightly smoky, like speyside scotch or the far off sound of a monsoon season storm gathering its strength to slake the sunbaked soil’s solipsistic supplications, desperate prayers spoken to wind spirits Ones who died long ago when the Nts'ósíkooh still flowed its own course spilling silty seed along slender canyons, and Tó Neinilii smiled more. Tonight there are 2161 miles and six states that hate us to their bones Between us but I can still feel my heart in my throat playing D beat and rolls on the slack skins of my stained glass soul While I speak with a tongue lent to me by Sappho And I swear I can feel her touch through goddamned phone

after the storm, the air still shakes in me my hands remember lightning as a need i learned to count the quiet between texts to read the hum where wanting learns to wait i loved like weather trained to never rest each charge a plea, each spark a risk to take i mistook burning fast for being held and paid in ash for every promise made i feared the dark would swallow me alone or worse, i’d live unknowing who i was so i kept standing in the electric afraid that calm would mean i’d disappear then something warm met static without fear no grasping hands, no prophecy of storms just presence steady as a grounded wire that let the current soften as it stayed now love feels like the sky just after rain still bright with charge, but finally safe to breathe

crumbly,
messy—
we were a coffee cake:
delicate,
delightful in the hands and mouth,
disintegration our fate.
