Cyanotyping was used to make blueprints back in the day and is one of the earliest methods of printmaking. The iron salts painted on the paper reacts with the sun, leaving a white print where the negative was. Chemistry and art combined!

Metals like cobalt can form colourful compounds, this property is used here to measure the amount of cobalt in a sample. This pretty pink hue says it's a lot! And it's gorgeous to look at 😍🌸 Different metals have different colours, so it can also help us know which one is in a sample!

Cuvettes filled with green and purple liquids placed in a gradient.
When making protein it can be hard to know how much you've made. Sometimes use colourful methods to figure it out, where the protein reacts to turn the green chemical purple. More purple, more protein! Which sample do you think has the most beautiful colour?

What's most exciting when making hydrogen? Seeing bubbles! When enough gas molecules are made, they join to form little bubbles. Here I've made very small amounts of hydrogen, for energy storage we'll need a lot more and understanding the fundamentals can help in upscaling.
#scicommUU25 #hydrogen
Voltammetry-time! This technique informs us about how much energy is needed to make an electron move, for example to make the chemical reaction to form hydrogen take place. Hydrogen is the future fuel, and understanding how to make it sustainably is crucial!

I’ve never used social media to share my work or thoughts. I’ve realized how powerful communication is for making science more accessible and opening space for dialogue🌍 It’s time to change!
Thanks to #scicommUU25 for giving me the nudge to step out
This is my first step. Let’s see where it goes 🌱
Interested in fine tuning your skills in oral presenattion and pitching your research? This 2h workshop has been a great experience with the students, good job pitching guys! #scicommuu25
Our very ancient ancestor and our parasite nowadays - Giardia. #Giardias are unicellular #protozoa in the #Diplomonada order. There are 8 species A to H, and subspecies within each group. A and B species infect humans all over the world, causing millions of cases of diarrhea!

Thank you to all the amazing, bright and hardworking participants of #SciCommUU25!!
You guys were brilliant, it was a pleasure to organize and deliver these three days to you.
Can’t wait to see all the ways you’ll make this world better with your science and your communication! ☀️
Finishing up this amazing 2025 edition of our course with a new teacher - Tzeni Karamanli brings us the #marketing perspective to communication. Similar but not the same as #scicomm, there is a lot to learn to be more effective communicators, and why not, perhaps explore a new career!
#scicommUU25
Our students now put knowledge to practice giving us short presentations that are relatable, memorable and impactful.
Through them we learned about sustainable fuels, microorganisms, Y chromosome loss, cooking vs. lab work & parasites.
#SciCommUU25
@hugogdtc.bsky.social continues our course with oral presentation skills and pitch techniques.
Storytelling as a central point to be memorable and grab attention.
#SciCommUU25
Final day of #SciCommUU25 comes in hot with Adeline Marcos from FECYT, bringing us the world of science journalism. How do science becomes news?
The students had their own take on it covering the project EcoSentinel, which looks into enhancing plants to become nature’s guardians 🌿🌱

Besides research I also spend time on outreach to the public. In 2023 I took part in the Uppsala SciFest chemistry show, where we inspired kids to get into chemistry! If you are at UU or SLU, host your own activity this year! 🧪

Hi Bluesky! I'm a chemistry PhD-student working with artificial enzymes for hydrogen evolution. Last year we could show our work combining a de novo protein with a synthetic catalyst, making a fully artificial enzyme, designed with human hands!

Meet #Giardia duodenalis, a cute protist from #Diplomonada order. Despite its cute looks, it's not cool when it infects you! It causes fatty #diarrhea, #malabsorption & #dehydration. So wash your hands, food & consume clean water, especially when traveling or camping.
Safe holidays!

Closing off day 2 by the one & only @gorizaola.bsky.social with essential tips on how to use #socialmedia for #scicomm, and an exploration of why would a scientist want to spend time doing so!
Almetrics impact, inclusive citizen science, visibility of research, and more!

We also talked podcasts! Of course, a favorite of mine. I shared my love for audio format #SciComm, lessons learned from #theAMRstudio 7 years of experience, and brainstormed new #podcasts ideas.
Some ideas: Safety Bites (food safety) or Addicionary (addictions A to Z) cool right? 😎

And continuing with a theory and practice session on @wikipedia.org w/ Olle Terenius.
Updating wikipedia with the most up to date and reliable knowledge is surely a way to make impact. With 500 million page access a day globally, it is the most visited source of general information!
#ScicommUU25
Day 2 starting with an exploration of different #outreach opportunities around Uppsala, Sweden and beyond!

After several delays and a very late arrival, I'm back in Uppsala for taking part on the postgraduate "Science Communication and Outreach" course at Uppsala University (10 years now!!!) #SciCommUU25
Let's talk about why I do #SciComm, and hoy we can use social media for this.
Closing off day 1 with Andreas Dahlin founder & lead at @vyscience.bsky.social which bring us a condensed version of the wonderful things he & his team share in their in-depth courses.
Supporting science communication with impactful & memorable visuals is so important.

To study #spacecells, we break them open and dissolve thousands of #metabolites inside them.
Then, #massspectrometry acts like a super-smart detective — sorting molecules by weight and charge to identify them.
This helps us decode how space changes cells at the molecular level. 🔬🕵️♀️✨
