Copernicus saw the Earth revolve around the sun, but his observations clashed with the Ptolemaic model of the universe, which said the Earth was at the center of things and the sun and everything else revolved around it. That view was embraced by the Catholic Church, until it removed Copernicus from its “forbidden” list 142 years later.

On this day in 1616, the Catholic Church banned the writing of Nicolaus Copernicus. His work titled "On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres" was added to Rome’s Index of Forbidden Books.
