Europeans challenge US big tech with alternative app menu Driven by concerns over privacy and geopolitical vulnerability, Europeans are increasingly adopting local "app menus" and open-source software to reduce reliance on US big tech.

@austinfilmfest.bsky.social The Dream Weaver short is a second rounder for 2025! This is a humbling recognition for this project.

This is an anomaly, Guy. Granted, it's one of a tremendous amount of similar anomalies. So many anomalies. An abundance of them. There seems to be a normalization of them. All that is to say, no one wants a period piece.

Started writing this new short film. It's weird, not quite like anything I've ever done before, and I'm really excited about it.

For July 4th, I'm sharing the 4th page from 4 different scripts.

Not sure if this is a thing - but it is now, I suppose.

I just finished Act 1 of my new feature, and it's everything I wanted it to be! When my Act 1s click, it reassures me I'm on track and to press on and complete a full first draft.

Is there any part of the writing process that reassures you that youโ€™re on the right path?

In January I pitched 100 lit agents and only got back 14 rejections. I just pitched 50 small press publishers. The grind is real.

A look into my big #scriptwriting notebook. Even though ultimately I won't be responsible for the look of my stories when they get to the screen, I like to take the aesthetic and mood I want to convey in mind when I'm writing. This is a peek at some of the VENERATION 'mood boarding'.

I wanted to thank everyone for a great first month of The Development Track. I have heard from people all over the world and have given script notes to some really stellar writers. My slots are filling up fast, and I'll only be offering my introductory prices for another month. #sciptsky

3 stars to the March 1992 draft of the Jurassic Park screenplay by Malia Scotch Marmo.

SPOILER

Still has a lot of the structure of Crichton's draft and novel, and is largely just a straight rewrite of that, taking some characters off in unusually divergent ways.

- Grant is largely still his book self. Him hating kids hasn't become a thing yet.
- The kids still have the book dynamic: Tim is a couple years older and likes dinos and computers, Lex likes baseball and complains a lot. Tim is the one who has to get the computer system rebooted.
- Malcolm and chaos theory have been entirely removed in this draft, which is odd given how central and iconic they both were to the story. Instead, Genaro is now a flashy handsome lawyer, and he's the one whose leg is injured in the T-Rex attack. He spends the rest of the script bandaged up in the bunker, but instead of contributing in any way, just has some odd comedy bits about being stoned on morphine.
- Arnold is still hovering between his book and film versions.
- Ed Regis is still in here as a flashy and excited tour guide (I mentally cast Howie Mandel), who gets killed during the T-Rex attack.

- Hammond is a big and boisterous flim flam man (I mentally cast Rip Torn) who has his own comical "command throne" and the recurring catchphrase "Oh, balls!" At the end, when everyone else gets on the helicopters, he refuses, has a two page rant about how important he and his park are, then promptly falls off a cliff and drowns in a pit of mud. One of the last shots is a mosquito landing on his hand, bringing us full circle from the opening title montage of the mosquitos in amber.
- Ellie is now the one who has to go into the electronics shed to reboot the electricity, and evade the raptor who killed Arnold.
- Ellie's thread from the Crichton draft is still here, of investigating why all the dinosaurs are showing signs of illness. Instead of the berries or lysine, it's because they're all juveniles that Hammond pumped full of growth hormones so he'd get adult specimens on a tight schedule. This is revealed near the middle instead of near the end like in Crichton's draft, and this further adds that the dinosaurs only last a season before dying, which Grant speculates is due to corruption from mosquito DNA.
- The river raft has been cut down to just a few pages of white water rapids without the T-Rex. Instead, they add the scene of Grant and the kids getting caught in the running herd of dinos, then having to scale the electric fence. Tim doesn't get electrified, though.
- Muldoon survives.
- Wu continues throughout the story, advising people until he's killed by a raptor, much like the book. He's initially written more comedically and befuddled.

- The raptor kitchen scene is still the book version, with Tim using steaks to lure one into the freezer, but adds a preceding scene in the gift shop where they distract it with wind up toys.
- The scene of Grant killing a raptor with a poisoned egg is still in here, but instead of it being the final set piece, it's followed by Crichton's scene of Grant (now with the kids) being chased onto the collapsing T-Rex skeleton by the raptors.
- Instead of a shaving can with embryos, Nedry steals an entire cart incubator with eggs inside. It gets to the boat, with the ticking clock of stopping it before it reaches mainland. Instead of raptors being aboard, the crew doesn't notice as the eggs start to hatch.
- Still has the ticking clock of a raptor breaking through the bars on the sky light as they try to get the power back on.
- There's some nice description early on about how the entire facility is still half-built with cables and wiring everywhere, and how the plants they've created grow so rapidly they're constantly encroaching on the roads, but this doesn't ultimately go anywhere.

Overall, a fun and entertaining draft, but the pace is all over the place, and while you can tell Spielberg has worked out some of his central setpieces, he still hasn't nailed the overall streamlining of the cast and structure, and some of the changes in this draft (Hammond, cutting Malcolm) are even more of a departure from the book than the finished film is. I can see why they quickly decided to go a different route.

First page of THE MAN IN THE WOODPILE. I haven't settled on a logline yet, but it's kind of like HEREDITARY and THE BABADOOK crossed with a modern retelling of THE GREEN KNIGHT. A little pagan horror for the holidays! #firstpagefriday #sciptsky

More work today on the ANGELGRINDER outline.

"In a retro-future Los Angeles where monsters are real, a retired Hunter finds himself caught up in a web of deceit, dark magic, and murder when he takes on a case for a chilly Hollywood socialite."

It's Hellblazer by way of GDT...
