Fourth Barred warbler of the year in the garden. That’s two years on the run with 4 records in the garden. Taken through my salt spray covered window. #shetlandbirding #scotlandbirding
#scotlandbirding ran the gauntlet of Trump’s vast police cordon with a high-powered scope to get the Western Sandpiper this morning which showed well after an hour’s wait in the cold. 2 American visitors to the Ayrshire coast … there’s a joke in here somewhere….
Wood Sandpiper
A Ruff in its funky post breeding mash-up plumage.
#scotlandbirding Musselburgh Surfie took 2 goes & a very kind French birder who told me in the lagoon hide that he’d found it after I’d spent 2 hours not finding it. Merci!! The ‘wader fest’ lagoons also turned up 1 Wood Sand, 1 Ruff, 2 Sanderling, 3 Dunlin, 1 Greenshank + 8 Little Gull
#caithnessbirds - Sooty Shearwater heading North & a single Stormie heading south off ‘The Trinkie’ at Wick early am. Adult White-tailed Eagle midday was epic. And nothing says autumn like a juv Wheatear & non-breeding plumage Grey Plover on an estuary #scotlandbirding
Summer Great Northern Diver fishing 20 mtrs offshore.
Short-eared Owl - literally a drive-by shooting …
Merlin - thought I’d messed up as 3 were calling as I pulled up but couldn’t see them. This one then appeared on pylon wires after a 30 minute wait.
One of 2 Pine Marten that crossed the forest track in front of me as I fumbled for the camera. The larger adult (presumably) was first - I missed - this is the younger one (presumably it’s young of this year). What animals! Found alongside about 3 billion midgies …
#scotlandbirding another cracking day in Caithness - nothing astonishingly rare but everything in great plumage & in its ‘real habitat’. Moorland, cliffs, coastal, forest, lochs - it’s just a joy to spend time in them & wait to see what appears. Blimey - I’m getting sentimental …
I'd only seen imm. Glaucous Gulls previously, so was very pleased to find my 1st adult on an evening visit to the Ring of Brodgar, Orkney on our recent trip - we watched it cruising around, it even perched on top of one of the stones briefly! Memorable & pretty iconic!

Another spectacular day in the west highlands - SPBF, PBF & Chequered Skippers with a few Spotted Flys chucked in … no luck yet with WWarbler at usual spots #scotlandbirding
First Sand Martin and Northern Wheatears along the Elvan Water in the Southern Uplands. #Scotland #ScotlandBirding #ScottishBirding #BirdUTMProject #BirdUTM #birding

A couple of showy birds in Lerwick yesterday. Little Bunting and Barred Warbler. #ukbirding #scotlandbirding
The Rosefinch is still in the garden today for its 3rd day.
Also saw this Red Breasted Fly in Mid Yell today. Found yesterday by @folkestonebirds and crew yesterday. #scotlandbirding #ukbirding
The last stop of our holiday was Musselburgh, but incoming thick fog and drizzle foiled our search for the long-staying Stejneger’s Scoter. However a close fly-past of 18 Brent Geese was a nice end to a great week. #ScotlandBirding #UKbirding
