Mouse not just about churches, you know. She love a scamper around a castle too especially if it has C12 origins. Location of #MouseGoingUnderground and #SearchForTheChapel, Mouse visited #ChepstowCastle in July 2024 #HeidiAtChepstow #MouseInMonmouthshire
Floriate carving around the chapel window (detail). Definitely Decorated Period. #SearchForTheChapel BONUS EDITION #StoneworkSunday #SundayStonework
The final piece of the jigsaw. Piscina by the south window exactly where you would expect to find it, south of the altar which would sit under the east window. Rather beautifully carved. Trefoil recessed into an outer moulded pointed arch. Slighted basin #SearchForTheChapel (7/7)
South elevation of tower chapel. Single pointed light. Roll moulded with hood mould (which probably had stops) and window seat. #SearchForTheChapel (6/7)
Found it. Large pointed window looking east, located in a tower south of the castle gatehouse (or to the left as you face it). Bearing its date in mind it probably had Decorated-style tracery. Creasing shows a change to the roofline at some time #SearchForTheChapel (5/7)
The segmental pointed arch is a motif in this castle. Seen here framing a lovely window seat basking in the glow from a trefoil headed single light. It also shows that dressed stone was also coated rather than being left bare #SearchForTheChapel (4/7)
Even Mouse get used to bare stone in medieval buildings, especially castles, and then she get a reminder that pretty much everything would once have had a lime coating now lost to the elements. Here some remnants cling valiantly to the 800 year old walls #SearchForTheChapel (3/7)
For lovers of segmental chamfered pointed arches everywhere. That really is a work of art. Perhaps it's through here? #SearchForTheChapel (2/7)
Maybe this is what Jimi meant. "There must be some kind of way outa here...". Every self respecting castle had a place of worship somewhere, even if it's now lost. Well it is Sunday, so Mouse share her #SearchForTheChapel (1/7)
