The Nurse’s Soliloquy

Act 5, Scene 3

I have lost this tug-o-war with the Divine.
Spent my life in service to higher powers,
washed their plates, linen, floors, children.
I weaned Susan quickly so I could clutch
a Capulet to my breast. I wasn’t there when
she died in sweats, was nursing Juliet instead,
little sun, mirror daughter. My husband passed
the next winter, his burial marked only by their
mausoleum’s huge shadow. I tried to keep her alive,
recommended the County when it fell through
with that Montague boy. Now I’ve lost a daughter
twice, God can have me. My hands are bloody and raw.

I posted this over on Twitter for @blackboughpoetry.bsky.social's #ShakespeareDay event on the Bard's birthday last Wednesday, so thought I'd share it over here!

I've been teaching Romeo and Juliet for 12 years, so figured the play was finally worth a poem out of me 💀

📜 Companies aren't scrapping #DEI—they’re renaming it.
As #Shakespeare wrote: "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet", so remember—and inclusive culture still matters, no matter the label.

Titus Andronicus

Just a wee tale of lava-hot hate, elaborate revenge, and creative cannibalism.

(Julie Taymor directed a pretty vivid movie of this play in 1999.)

O villain, villain, smiling, damned villain!

My tables,—meet it is I set it down,

That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain.

Black-and-white illustration titled Dramatis Personae by John Austen, depicting characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet. A large, robed, and hooded central figure looms like a puppet master, manipulating strings attached to smaller, elaborately dressed Elizabethan characters below. The scene is theatrical and symbolic, evoking themes of control and fate.

Today is #ShakespeareDay, the right time to think and reflect. Please read till the end:

"To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles
And by opposing end them."

“Hark. villains, I will grind your bones to dust,

And with your blood and it I'll make a paste,

And of the paste a coffin I will rear,

And make two pasties of your shameful heads,

And bid that strumpet, your unhallowed dam,

Like to the earth swallow her own increase.”

A Falcon in Falcon’s Clothing

The smooth whetstone sharpens my wit and rapier,
my silken tongue, dagger-edged strikes deadly, like a falcon in flight.
The lords are coy in my presence,
knowing a word is all it would take to
lure these Verona ladies to my nest.
I am a master of the nobles’ sport.

Should these men ever wish to feel my claws in duels, they need only state the field and which day’s dawn they wish to die below.

Do not mistake my mirth for meekness,
my ferocity cuts deeper than a hidden blade
my loyalty is more deadly than the wolf’s tooth;
an affront to my daydreaming friend Romeo
is an affront to me—Mercutio.

tan sólo
que transcurre
un pobre actor que
orgulloso
consume su turno sobre el escenario
para jamás volver a ser oído
Una historia contada por un necio
llena de furia que nada significa..📖

Honorable Mention
My Hour Upon the Stage
We strut and fret our hour upon the stage, And most poor players crave a leading role To be a tragic hero's all the rage,
A Hamlet and not a Horatio:
A brief candle for an hour brightly burns, Before out, out, it goes, before the fall—
And though the audience a lesson learns, Predestined, they cannot their fate forestall.
But I am more than a single tragic flaw,
Like hubris, ambition, or jealousy —
Not bound by ancient, predetermined law, I'm free to choose my own destiny.
To this poor player, a different role give,
Not fated to die, but fated to live!

In honor of #Shakespeareday (the birthday of #WilliamShakespeare) here’s my #sonnet My Hour Upon The Stage, which placed as an honorable mention in last year’s @ncpls2025 Review.

It is a Shakespearean sonnet and form, and references a few of The Bard’s plays. #Shakespeare #nationalpoetrymonth
