Yesterday, friends sent a useful reminder to #ShaveThePeak

Last week we kept an eye on extreme rain, flooding and storm sewerage overflows

What happenswhen we cannot rely on traditional services?

Temperatures are hitting over 90°F with high humidity, pushing our electricity grid to its peak. This means dirty, expensive "peaker plants" might fire up to meet demand.

Conserve energy and #ShaveThePeak from 4-8 PM (especially from 6-8 PM). Collective efforts can make a difference. 💪

A line graph with 3 curves showing energy demand forecast, actual, and estimated solar contribution. The Y axis is MW and runs from 14k through 28k.

The X axis is time of day in 4 hour intervals, and it doesn't say it but this was Wednesday July 16 in New England.

The orange actual curve starts climbing at about 4am and closely matches the blue forecast curve all day. But around 7am a yellow curve showing the estimated addition of the solar production pulls away and climbs off to the left of the actual curve. This means that if we didn't have the solar our demand would have looked way higher all day until the peak is hit around 7pm and the curves start to drop again.

There's a small box of text right above the peak area that says:

23,830 MW / HE 08:00 PM blue text
24,037 MW 07:00 PM orange text
24,486 MW 07:00 PM yellow text

Interesting. Green Energy Consumers sent their #ShaveThePeak newsletter today with a graph I always wondered about. It illustrates where the curve would be without the behind-the-meter #Solar that we have.

First time I've seen it illustrated.
