Polke's work spans painting, photography, sculpture and film, using diverse materials and techniques in each form. A founder, alongside Gerhard Richter, of “Capitalist Realism”, Polke playfully pokes at consumer behavior and commercial (over)production in his work. “Bunnies” is one of his most Pop Art-ish early pieces. For this painting, he appropriated a Playboy Club image and, like Roy Lichtenstein, presented it anew as a pixilated blurring of dots, reflecting his fascination with the look of commercial newsprint imagery. His dots were painstakingly made using the rubber eraser end of a pencil. Unlike Lichtenstein’s dot paintings, Polke’s image appears smudged and indistinct, as if the women are becoming lost in the abyss of commercialism.
