The process on this piece so far: TL: initial loose sketch. TR: tight sketch BL: drawing done in Procreate (accidentally grabbed a screen shot of a version nor quiet done). BC: screenshot in Illustrator showing the phase after converting the Procreate drawing into a .psd and then pasting each layer into Illustrator and live tracing those shapes to convert them into vectors. BR: print out of all the layers colored in with colored pencil to finalize the color scheme.

I printed out a “map” of all my papercuts and finalized the colors. Once all the pieces are cut it’ll be time to paint them! More info in alt text #papercut #slavic #slavicmyth #artprocess

Procreate image inspired by the Kikimora and Rusalka from Slavic myth. Symbolism Kikimora: one version says she dresses in moss like a fur coat. I’m a Floridian so while it’s an air plant not a moss, I drew her a Spanish moss wrap. She holds her hand in the “as above so below” gesture and wears a babushka and an apron with a sewing needle. The witchy broom is also hers as the Kikimora is connected to domestic work and keeping a tidy house. Rusalka: described as maidens with pale almost translucent skin and green hair, she wears a floral crown (that will have Florida flowers already drawn) and a skirt from the Łodz region. Rusalki are associated with water so her hair is wet and there’s lily pads. Other symbols: the tree and web (golden orb weaver’s) represent family and a mockingbird sings in the middle of the night, as they sometimes do.
